생명의 말씀

“또 참으로 나와 멍에를 같이한 자 네게 구하노니 복음에 나와함께 힘쓰던 저 부녀들을 돕고 또한 글레멘드와 그 외에 나의 동역자들을 도우라 그 이름들이 생명책에 있느니라”

성경은 생명책에 내 이름이 기록되어야만 구원을 얻을 수 있다고 말씀합니다. 특별히 오늘 본문은 빌립보 교인들 중에 몇몇의 이름이 이미 생명책에 기록되어 있다고 사도바울이 말하고 있습니다. 어딘가에 내 이름이 기록되는 것이 참으로 기쁠 때가 있습니다. 합격의 장소에 기록된 이름입니다. 원하는 대학의 합격자 명단에 내 이름이 기록됐을 때 얼마나 기쁘겠습니까? 아니면 복권이나 어떤 경품에 내 이름이 당첨되어도 기쁠 것입니다. 어떤 물건이 내 이름으로 소유되어있다 해도 기쁜 일입니다. 그러나 성경은 그 어떤 것보다도 생명책에 내 이름이 기록된 것으로 기뻐하라고 말합니다. 주의 이름으로 귀신을 내어쫓고 기뻐 돌아온 70문도에게 예수님은 “귀신들이 너희에게 항복하는 것으로 기뻐하지 말고 너희 이름이 하늘에 기록된 것으로 기뻐하라”(눅10:20)고 하셨습니다. 우리의 시민권은 하늘에 있기 때문입니다. 우리의 소속은 땅이 아니라 하늘이기에 생명책에 이름이 없다는 것은 하늘 시민권이 없다는 말과 같습니다.

그러면 빌립보 교인들은 어떻게 해서 벌써 생명책에 그 이름이 기록될 수 있었을까요? 그것은 사도바울과 빌립보 교인들간의 참된 사랑과 순종의 관계를 통해서 설명할 수 있습니다. 빌립보 교회의 목자로서 사도바울은 자기 생명보다 더한 사랑으로 교인들을 돌봤습니다. 백성들의 죄가 사함받지 못하면 자기의 이름을 생명책에서 지워달라고 기도했던 모세와 같은 사랑이 사도바울의 사랑이었습니다(출32:32). 그 사랑을 받고 사랑에 순종했던 순전한 사람들이 바로 빌립보 교인들입니다. 말씀에 순종하고 말씀과 함께 멍에를 메며 힘쓰는 삶이야 말로 생명책에 기록될 수 있는 비결입니다. 그러기에 사도바울은 그들을 가리켜 “나의 기쁨이요 면류관인 사랑하는 자들”이라 부르지 않았습니까? 여러분도 하나님의 기쁨이요 면류관이 되고 있습니까?

The Word of Life

Yes, and I ask you, my true companion, help these women since they have contended at my side in the cause of the gospel, along with Clement and the rest of my co-workers, whose names are in the book of life.

The Bible tells us that we can only receive salvation if our names are recorded in the book of life. Especially in today’s main verse the apostle Paul is saying that among the members of the Philippians church, some have already been recorded in the book of life. There are times we feel happiness when we see our names recorded in the place of acceptance. How happy would you feel if you saw your name on the list for acceptance into a university or college you wanted to go to? We’d also feel happy if we win the lottery or a prize.

It is also a joyous thing to know you have become the owner of something. However, the Bible tells us to be more joyous about our names being recorded in the book of life than anything else. To the 70 disciples who come back rejoicing after casting out demons Jesus says “however, do not rejoice that the spirits submit to you, but rejoice that your names are written in heaven” (Luke 10:20). This is because our citizenship lies in heaven. We don’t belong on land but in heaven therefore if our names aren’t written in the book of life it means that we don’t have citizenship.

Then how was it possible for the saints of the Philippians church to have their names already recorded in the book of life? An explanation can be provided through the true love and obedient relationship between the saints of the Philippians church. As the shepherd of the church of Philippians the apostle Paul looked after the saints with more love for them than his own life. The Apostle Paul’s love was so great for the saints that he prayed like Moses to erase his name from the book of life if the sins of the saints were not forgiven (Exo 32:32). The innocent people who received this love and obeyed were the saints of the Philippians church. Hence the apostle Paul referred to them as “my joy and crown, the ones I love”. Are you the joy and crown of God?

As those who have heavenly citizenship, pray for a life of obedience and devotion and for your name to be recorded in the book of life.
