십자가의 축복

창13:14-15

생명의 말씀

“롯이 아브람을 떠난 후에 여호와께서 아브람에게 이르시되 너는 눈을 들어 너 있는 곳에서 동서남북을 바라보라 보이는 땅을 내가 너와 네 자손에게 주리니 영원히 이르리라”

롯은 비옥한 땅 소돔 고모라 성을 향해 떠났지만 아브라함은 “주의 궁정에서 한 날이 다른 곳에서 천날보다 나음”(시84:10)을 깨달았기에 홀로 약속의 땅에 남아 있었습니다. 이때 하나님께서는 아브라함에게 나타나셔서 동서남북 보이는 땅과 티끌 같이 많은 자손의 축복을 말씀하셨습니다. 이 두 가지 축복은 한마디로 ‘십자가의 축복’이라 할 수 있습니다.

‘동서남북 보이는 땅’의 축복은 17절 말씀을 볼 때 ‘종과 횡’으로 걷고 밟을 때 얻을 수 있는 축복입니다. 여기서 우리가 주목할 것은 ‘종과 횡’으로 걷는 것입니다. 종과 횡은 하나님께서 눈을 들어 바라보게 하신 땅에 십자가를 만드는 행위가 아닙니까? 십자가는 가로축 하나와 세로축 하나가 합해서 된 것으로, 하나와 하나가 결합하여 둘이 된 것이 아니라 넷이 되었기에 배가의 축복을 뜻합니다. 이 십자가의 네 방향은 동서남북 사방을 가리키며 사통팔달 형통의 축복, 사방으로 연결되는 교제의 축복, 분열이 아니라 화합과 결합, 점점 더 강하여지는 증가의 축복, 마이너스(-)가 아니라 플러스(+)의 축복을 상징하고 있습니다.

십자가의 중심은 그리스도입니다. 그리스도께서 고난으로 이룬 십자가가 믿는 성도에게는 영원한 하늘나라의 기업이 되기에 십자가는 성도에게 가장 큰 축복의 상징이 되는 것입니다. 하나님은 종과 횡의 십자가를 통해 아브라함에게 영원한 하늘 기업을 주셨을 뿐 아니라 예수 그리스도를 통해 잉태될 수많은 믿음의 자녀까지 겸하여 주셨습니다. 땅의 티끌 같이 수많은 아브라함의 육신의 자손뿐 아니라 여럿 중 오직 하나, 곧 ‘그리스도’께서 아브라함의 참 자손이 되셨으니 사람으로 태어나 이보다 더 큰 축복이 어디 있겠습니까(갈3:16)? 자녀를 잉태할 수 없는 죽은 몸이었기에 예수의 때 보기를 소원하다 종과 횡의 축복의 땅에서 그리스도를 바라보고 기뻐 뛰던 아브라함(요8:56)! 바로 십자가의 축복으로 고난 뒤에 오는 부활의 기쁨을 맛본 자의 모습이 아닙니까?

십자가를 통해 하나님은 아브라함에게 영원한 기업의 땅과 그리스도를 그의 자손으로 주셨습니다. 종과 횡의 십자가의 축복이 나에게도 임하여 날마다 그리스도를 바라보며 기쁨으로 살아가는 하루를 위해 기도하십시오.

“The LORD said to Abram after Lot had parted from him, Look around from where you are, to the north and south, to the east and west. All the land that you see I will give to you and your offspring forever.”

As Lot headed for the fruitful land of Sodom and Gomorah, Abraham remained alone in the promised land as he realised that “better is one day in your courts than a thousand elsewhere” (Psa 84:10). It was here God appeared to Abraham and spoke to him about the land where the four corners can be seen and of the blessings of a sea of descendants. These two blessings are “the blessing of the cross”.

In verse 17 the blessing of “the land where all four corners are visible” is a blessing that can be acquired when we walk the land in “breadth and length”. Here we need to focus on the “breadth and length”. Isn’t the breath and length the cross that was made upon the land that God made us look up at with our eyes? A cross is formed using one horizontal and one vertical piece combined and signifies a double fold of blessings that by combining one of each it becomes four and not two. The four directions of the cross points to all four corners (north, south, east, and west) and symbolizes the blessing of prosperity and fellowship that connects in all directions, peace and unification, the blessing of increased blessings and the blessing of not minus (-) but plus (+).

At the center of the cross is Christ. The cross becomes the symbol of the greatest blessing to the saint as it is the eternal heavenly inheritance that was made through the sufferings of Christ. Through the cross of “breadth and length” God not only gave Abraham an eternal inheritance in heaven but also added on the blessing of many descendants of faith who would be conceived through Jesus Christ. How great is it to be blessed with many descendants, not to mention Jesus Christ becoming Abraham’s true descendant (Gal 3:16)? Whilst longing to see the coming of Jesus having past child bearing age, when blessed with the blessing of breadth and length, he jumped around with joy (John 8:56). Is this not the picture of a man who has tasted the joy of resurrection that follows the sufferings of the blessing of the cross?

Prayer title

Through the cross God gave Abraham an inheritance of the eternal land and Christ as his offspring. Pray that the blessing of breadth and length will come upon you and you will be able to live each day in joy looking up to Christ.
