생명의 말씀

“베드로가 멀찍이 예수를 좇아 대제사장의 집 뜰에까지 가서 그 결국을 보려고 안에 들어가 하속들과 함께 앉았더라”

예수님의 수제자로 자부했던 베드로에게는 커다란 신앙의 오점이 있습니다. 예수님을 세 번씩이나 부인한 것입니다. 베드로가 이처럼 예수를 부인하게 된 원인을 보면 먼저 그의 신앙이 예수와 함께 하지 못하고 ‘멀찍이’ 떨어진 데서 찾을 수 있습니다. 오늘 본문에서 분명 베드로는 예수를 좇아가되 ‘가까이’가 아니라 ‘멀찍이’ 떨어져서 좇았다고 말씀하고 있습니다. 그러면 베드로가 멀찍이 떨어져 예수를 좇은 이유는 무엇일까요?

첫째는 자기의 신앙에 해로움이 있을까봐 멀찍이 떨어져 좇았습니다. 괜히 가까이 갔다가 예수의 제자라고 붙잡혀서 해를 입지나 않을까 하는 두려움이 베드로에게 있었던 것입니다. 이것은 예수님과의 간격이 멀어진데서 비롯된 것입니다. 평소에 예수님을 사랑했다면 간격이 있을 수 없습니다. 마음을 다하지 못하고 온전히 믿지 못하는 불신이 간격을 만듭니다. 예수님은 “내가 네 안에 있고 네가 내 안에 있다”(요15:4-5)고 하셨는데, 베드로는 예수 안에 거하지 못했던 것입니다.

둘째는 일의 결국을 보기 위해서 멀찍이 좇았습니다. 가까이 동행할 용기는 없었지만, 결말에 대한 궁금증은 남아있었기에 멀찍이나마 떨어져서 예수를 좇았던 것입니다. 이것은 상당히 기회주의적인 행동입니다. 일이 잘되면 나타나고, 잘 풀리지 않으면 도망가려는 이중적인 마음으로 가는 것이 ‘멀찍이’ 신앙입니다. 나 때문에 고난의 십자가를 지기 위해 붙잡혀 어린 양처럼 끌려가는 예수를 보고서도 멀찍이 떨어져서 이익과 손실을 셈하는 모습이 아닙니까?“사랑 안에 두려움이 없고 온전한 사랑이 두려움을 내어 쫓는다”(요일4:18)고 했습니다. 우리에게 어떤 해가 온다 해도 두려워말고, 이해득실을 따지지 말고 가까이 다가가서 주님의 십자가를 지고 좇을 수 있는 참된 성도가 됩시다.

예수님과 여러분과의 거리는 어떠합니까? 혹시 베드로와 같이 ‘멀찍이’ 떨어져가는 비겁자는 아닙니까? 오늘 하루도 주님과의 간격이 없이 동행하며 십자가를 대신 지고 좇을 수 있기를 위해 기도하십시오.

The Word of Life

“But Peter followed him at a distance, right up to the courtyard of the high priest. He entered and sat down with the guards to see the outcome.”

There is a great flaw in the faith of Peter who took pride in being one of Jesus’ best students. It is the fact that he denied him three times. When we look at the reason Peter denied Jesus, firstly his faith was not with Jesus and was “distant”. The main verse tells us that Peter followed Jesus but rather than following Jesus closely, he followed him at a distance. Then why did Peter follow Jesus at a distance?

Firstly, he followed Jesus at a distance as he thought it may be harmful to his spiritual life. Within Peter’s heart was fear that if he went closer he would be caught for being one of Jesus’ disciples and harmed. This thought originated when he became distant from Jesus. If he loved Jesus there could not have been a gap, however the failure to believe wholeheartedly and disbelief produced this gap. Jesus said “I am in you and you are in me” John 15:4-5), but Peter could not remain within Jesus.

Secondly, He followed Jesus from a distance to see the outcome of the incident. He didn’t have the courage to follow closely, however he was curious to see the outcome hence he followed Jesus even at a distance. This is truly the act of an opportunist. It is a “distant” faith of a person who shows up when things are going well and runs away when things don’t turn out right. Isn’t this our appearance of counting our gain and loss even when we see Jesus being dragged away like a lamb to carry the cross of pain for us?

It says in 1 John 4:18, “There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear”. May we become true saints who are able to carry Jesus’ cross and follow him without calculating our gain or loss and not fear whatever harm may come our way.

What is the distance between you and Jesus? Are you not a coward like Peter who followed at a distance? Pray that we may be able to walk with God closely and not at a distance and follow him carrying the cross.
