생명의 말씀

“그는 실로 우리의 질고를 지고 우리의 슬픔을 당하였거늘 우리는 생각하기를 그는 징벌을 받아서 하나님에게 맞으며 고난을 당한다 하였노라”

이사야 53장은 흔히 ‘구약의 지성소’라 부를 정도로 기독교인들에게 수많은 영감과 감동을 준 본문입니다. 특별히 메시야의 수난과 대속의 은총이 구구절절이 담겨 있어서 초대교회 교부인 폴리캅은 ‘구약복음의 황금’이라고 했고, 헨델은 이사야 53장을 보면서 유명한 ‘메시야’를 작곡했는데, “나는 지금 세상 죄를 지고 가는 하나님의 어린 양을 보고 있다”고 하였습니다. 이 헨델의 메시야가 영국에서 공연될 때 영국 왕이 듣다가 벌떡 일어선 것이 계기가 돼서 메시야 곡을 연주할 때마다 청중들이 일어서는 관습이 생기기도 했습니다.

이사야 53장에서 이사야 선지자는 4복음서에서 당할 고난을 함축해서 다 기록해 놓았습니다. 우리의 구세주 메시야가 당할 극한 ‘수난’에 대한 기록입니다. ‘수난’이란 겪기 힘겨운 고통을 말합니다. 따라서 예수의 수난은 인류 역사가 시작된 이후부터 온 인류가 범한 죄를 홀로 담당하시는 고통을 뜻합니다. 온 인류의 죄를 죄 없으신 메시야께서 몽땅 인계를 받았습니다. 이를 성경은 ‘죄의 전가(轉嫁)’라고 합니다. 당신의 외아들을 십자가에 달리게 하사 죽음에 까지 던지셨습니다. 그리고 죄를 알지도 못하는 아들에게 인류의 모든 죄를 ‘전가’시키시고 우리에게는 죄 없다는 무죄선언을 하셨습니다.

이사야 53장에서 ‘그가’라는 단어는 영어성경과 한글성경 등을 합하여 볼 때 49번이나 등장합니다. 이사야 선지자가 말하는 ‘그’는 일찍이 사52:14절에 등장했던 ‘수난 당하는 자’로서 “얼굴이 타인보다 상한 자”를 말합니다. 그가 얼굴이 상한 것은 하나님께서 그에게 인류의 모든 죄악을 담당시키셨기 때문입니다. 특별히 주목할 것은 이사야 53장에서 ‘담당시켰다’라는 단어가 15번이나 반복되고 있다는 사실입니다. 격심한 고통 속에서도 하나님께서 담당시키신 죄악을 말없이 담당하시는 ‘수난’의 발자취를 그려주고 있는 이사야 53장을 통해 굳은 마음이 녹아지고 온 몸에 전율을 느끼는 감동의 역사가 있을줄 믿습니다.

우리의 질고를 지고, 수난의 길을 걸어가신 주님! 하나님께서 우리의 모든 죄를 담당시키셨을 때 무죄하신 그는 어린양같이 잠잠히 그 길을 순종으로 담당하셨듯이, 고난 주간을 앞두고 주님이 걸어가신 발자취를 온전히 따라갈 수 있도록 기도하십시오.

The Word of Life

“Surely he took up our pain and bore our suffering, yet we considered him punished by God, stricken by him, and afflicted.”

Isaiah 53 is commonly called “the sanctuary of the Old Testament” giving countless numbers of spiritual insight and inspiration. Polycarp called it the “gold of Old Testament gospel” as it especially contains the contents of the Messiah’s suffering and redemption of grace and Hendel wrote the famous “Messiah” after reading Isaiah 53 saying “ I am watching the lamb of God carrying the sins of the world”. When Hendel’s “Messiah” was being played in England, the King of England suddenly stood up and ever since that happened the audience stood up whenever this song was played.

In Isaiah 53 the prophet Isaiah recorded a compressed version of the sufferings that the Messiah would go through. This is the record of the “extreme sufferings” that our savior the Messiah would be afflicted with. The sinless Messiah had taken on all the sins of mankind and in the Bible this is referred to as “the passing of sin”. God gave his one and only begotten son to be hung on the cross and threw him to his death, and then he passed on all the sins of mankind and deemed us sinless.

In Isaiah 53 the word “he” appears in both the English and Korean version of the Bible 49 times. The person the prophet Isaiah is referring to is the one who appears earlier on in Isaiah 52:14, the one who will be subject to suffering, “whose appearance is so disfigured beyond that of any human being and his form marred beyond human likeness”. His face had been disfigured as he was taking responsibility for all the sins of mankind.

Another fact we need to draw our attention to is that in Isaiah 53 the word “bear” appears 15 times. Through Isaiah 53 that provides us with the footprints of sufferings that Jesus took in silence even through extreme pain, I believe your hardened hearts will soften and your bodies will tremble with the work of inspiration.

Prayer Title

Our Lord who carried our burden, and walked the path of suffering! Just as Jesus who was free of sin took on our sins like a lamb in obedience pray that during the week of sufferings you may be able to follow the footsteps of the Lord.
