솔로몬의 병거와 마병

왕상 10:26-27

“솔로몬이 병거와 마병을 모으매 병거가 일천사백이요 마병이 일만이천이라 병거성에도 두고 예루살렘 왕에게도 두었으며 왕이 예루살렘에서 은을 돌같이 흔하게 하고 백향목을 평지의 뽕나무같이 많게 하였더라”

솔로몬 왕은 이스라엘 왕 가운데 가장 큰 권력과 영광을 누렸던 사람으로, 오늘 본문에 당시의 국방력과 경제력의 정도를 잘 드러내 주고 있습니다. 병거가 1,400이요 마병은 12,000이나 되었습니다. 예루살렘에서는 은을 돌같이 흔하게 여겼고 백향목을 평지의 뽕나무 같이 많게 하였다고 기록하고 있습니다. 그러면 이처럼 막강한 군사력과 경제력을 지닌 솔로몬 왕국이 남북으로 분열되고 바벨론에 패망한 이유는 무엇일까요?

역설적으로 성경은 솔로몬 왕의 병거와 마병으로 인해 멸망하게 되었다고 말합니다. 신 17:16절에서 하나님은 이미 모세에게 “왕된 자는 말을 많이 두지 말 것이요 말을 많이 얻으려고 그 백성을 애굽으로 돌아가게 말 것이니”라고 명령하셨습니다. 이는 하나님을 의지하지 않고 병거와 마병의 수를 의지하는 것이기 때문입니다. 결과적으로 솔로몬 왕은 모세를 통해 명령한 하나님의 율법을 어겼으며, 스스로 교만한 마음이 들어 하나님께 의지하지 않고 자신의 군사력을 의지하려 하였습니다.

이는 그의 부친 다윗이 처음에는 하나님만을 의지하고 하나님의 이름을 앞세우고 나아가다가, 인구조사를 명령하여 하나님께 무서운 심판을 받은 것과 같은 이치입니다(삼하 24:10-24). 당시 인구조사는 군인들의 수를 세는 것으로 군인들이 수는 국방력을 가늠하는 척도가 되었던 것입니다. 그러나 이 또한 하나님을 버리고 군인들과 말을 더 믿는 죄악이 되었던 것입니다.

참된 권력과 힘은 말(馬이)나 군인의 수에 있지 않고 오직 하나님께 있습니다. 이 한 가지를 잊지 말고 온전히 하나님만을 의지하는 자가 진정으로 강한 자입니다. 하나님께서 붙들어 주시는 자입니다.

여러분이 의지하는 것은 무엇입니까? 소유하고 있는 물질이나 권력이 아니라 하나님을 의지하고 앞세움으로 오늘 하루도 승리할 수 있기를 위해 기도하십시오.

Solomon’s Chariots And Horses

1 Kings 10:26-27

“Solomon accumulated chariots and horses; he had fourteen hundred chariots and twelve thousand horses, which he kept in the chariot cities and also with him in Jerusalem. The king made silver as common in Jerusalem as stones and cedar as plentiful as sycamore-fig trees in the foothills.”

King Solomon was a man who had enjoyed the most power and honor among all the kings of Israel, and through the main scripture reading, he reveals to us well the level of national defense and economic power during that time period. It is recorded that he had 1,400 chariots and 12,000 horses and in Jerusalem they considered silver as common stones and cedar as plentiful as sycamore-fig trees. Then what caused the powerful kingdom of Solomon who had such great military and economic power to divide into north and south and fall in the hands of Babylon?

The Bible speaks to us paradoxically that Solomon’s kingdom was destroyed due to Solomon’s chariots and horses. In Deuteronomy 17:16 God already commanded Moses that “the king, moreover, must not acquire great numbers of horses for himself or make the people return to Egypt to get more of them” as he was relying not on God but on the number of chariots and horses he had. Consequently, King Solomon’s heart had become arrogant and rather than relying on God he relied on his military power.

It is the same reason his father David received God’s judgmental wrath by commanding the census and not relying on God uplifting His name (2 Sam 24:10-24). The census at the time was carried out to count the number of soldiers as a means to gain an estimate of the nation’s military power. However, this was an act of sinning as he forsook God and trusted more on his soldiers and horses. True power and strength is not in the number of horses or soldiers but in God alone. The one who remembers this and relies solely on God is the one who is truly powerful and that person is the one whom God holds steadfast.

What is it that you rely on? Pray that you will be victorious today by living a life that does not rely on wealth and power but relies on God and puts Him first.
