수넴 여인의 뜨거운 모정

왕하4:21-22

생명의 말씀

“그 어미가 올라가서 아들을 하나님의 사람의 침상 위에 두고 문을 닫고 나와서 그 남편을 불러 이르되 청컨대 한 사환과 한 나귀를 내게로 보내소서 내가 하나님의 사람에게 달려갔다가 돌아오리이다”

오늘 본문의 주인공인 수넴 여인은 우리에게 참 신앙과 부모로서의 뜨거운 모정을 일깨워주고 있습니다. 먼저 본문 13절 말씀을 보면 엘리사 선지자는 수넴여인을 가리켜 ‘생각이 주밀하다’고 하였습니다. 여기서 ‘주밀(周密)하다’는 말은 “무슨 일이든지 빈 구석이 없고 자세하다”는 뜻입니다. 이는 엘리사 선지자가 수넴에 이르렀을 때에 이 여인이 날마다 음식으로 대접했을 뿐 아니라 남편에게 말하여 엘리사 선지자를 위해 작은 방을 준비하여 기거할 수 있도록 배려하였기 때문입니다. 아무리 친한 사람이라도 하루 이틀은 정성스럽게 대접하지만 일주일, 한 달 이상으로 시간이 길어지면 처음 마음과 같지 않고 불평이 생기게 마련입니다. 하지만 수넴 여인은 처음이나 나중이나 똑같은 마음으로 엘리사 선지자를 대접했습니다. 이는 엘리사 선지자를 ‘하나님의 거룩한 사람’으로 알아봤기 때문입니다(왕하4:9). 그 결과 수넴 여인은 어떠한 축복을 받게 되었습니까? 남편이 늙고 자녀가 없던 이 가정에 하나님께서 귀한 아들로 선물을 주셨습니다(왕하4:16-17). 하나님의 사람을 알아보고 그를 위해 주밀하게 배려하며 대접한 결과였던 것입니다.

수넴 여인의 위대한 신앙은 그녀의 아들의 죽음에 이르러 또 한번 나타납니다. 아들이 죽었지만 그녀는 하나님의 사람만 오면 살아날 것이라는 믿음으로 전혀 요동함이 없이 남편에게도 말하지 않고 엘리사 선지자에게 갔습니다. 어느 누가 자식이 죽었는데 통곡하지 않고 남편에게도 말하지 않겠습니까? 하지만 그녀는 선지자한테 가서도 자기 자식이 죽었다고 말하지 않았습니다. 단지 선지자의 발을 붙잡고 집에 한번만 가자고 하는 것입니다. 하나님의 사람이 오기만 하면 낫겠다는 확실한 믿음의 증거가 아니겠습니까? 수넴 여인과 같이 주밀하고 철두철미한 신앙과 믿음을 자녀들에게 심어주는 부모들이 필요한 때, 그와 같은 믿음의 부모들이 되시길 바랍니다.

The Shunammite Woman’s Deep Love For Her Son

2 Kings 4:21-22

The Word of Life

21She went up and laid him on the bed of the man of God, then shut the door and went out.22she called her husband and said, "Please send me one of the servants and a donkey so I can go to the man of God quickly and return."

The Shunammite woman in today’s main scripture reading revives a true faith and deep motherly love within us. First in verse 13 the prophet Elisha says to the Shunammite woman that her thoughts are prudent. Here the word “prudent”means that there are no gaps and everything is precise. This is because each time the prophet Elisha visited Shunam the Shunammite woman showed her hostility not only by serving her food but also by asking her husband to provide a small room for Elisha to stay. However close we may be with someone if we are to stay in theirhouse for weeks or months then the host will feel discomfort. However the Shunammite woman served the prophet Elisha with the same heart each and every time from the first to the last. This was because the Shunammite woman recognised the prophet Elisha as the ‘holy person of God’ (2 Kings 4:9). As a result God blessed the Shunammite woman who was childless and whose husband was old with precious son (2 Kings 4:16-17). This was the result of recognizing the person of God and carefully considering and serving the prophet Elisha.

The great faith of the Shunammite woman appears again when her son dies. Her son had died but the Shunammite woman believed that even if her son had died when the person of God comes he will be brought back to life. So without any doubt she didn’t

even tell her husband and went to the prophet Elisha. What person would not weep nor tell her husband when her child has died? However this woman did not even tell the prophet that her son was dead. She just held onto the hands of the prophet and requested that Elisha would go to her house with her. Is this not evidence of her faith that if the person of God just comes then her son would be revived? I hope that you will be able to instill the prudent and complete faith that the Shunammite woman had in your children and become a parent who has faith.
