The Light and Voice of Damascus

Acts 9:3-5

The Word of Life

3 As he neared Damascus on his journey, suddenly a light from heaven flashed around him. 4 He fell to the ground and heard a voice say to him, “Saul, Saul, why do you persecute me?”5 “Who are you, Lord?” Saul asked. “I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting,” he replied.

The apostle Paul who was one of the greatest individuals in the history of Christianity devoted his entire life to send out the gospel and in turn greatly contributed in proclaiming the Word of God throughout the entire world. Before turning into the great apostle Paul, Paul was one of the people who severely persecuted Christianity. How was he able to change from a persecutor to a great evangelist?

That was possible because he experienced the light of the city of Damascus and heard the voice of God. Before he became a servant of God, thus before he had experienced the light of Damascus and heard the voice of the Lord, Paul looked at people who believed in Jesus with a murderous look and persecuted them. However, after receiving the light that the Lord had come to him with in Damascus he began to know himself. Paul had found his true self after the greed and desire that once blinded him were taken away. The apostle Paul who had found his true inner self within this light now considered all things of the past as excrements and embarked on beginning a new life within Christ.

He now referred to himself and confessed “and last of all he appeared to me also, as to one abnormally born” (1 Cor 15:8) and showed the peak of humility. Also, in Ephesians 3:8, he said “I am less than the least of all the Lord’s people” and in 1 Timothy 1:15, he confesses that “among the sinners, I am the worst”.

Likewise, the apostle Paul was a loyal and devoted servant who had discovered his true self in the Lord after he had experienced the light in the city of Damascus and not only made humble confessions and no longer looked after himself but overcame all sorts of persecution and oppression for the Lord throughout his entire life (2 Cor 11:23-2). Therefore, the last thing remaining in Paul’s life was a torn and tattered outer garment and his old Bibl. If Paul had a medal it would be his scars that he gained through all kinds of misunderstandings and persecution. However, because Paul had kept the light he had experienced in Damascus and the spiritual dream from it he was always able to give thanks and be loyal.

Pray that you too may experience the light that leads your future path and shows you the world of the spiritual Word so that you may hear the Lord’s voice and live a life of obedience in accordance with the Word.
