고통받는 곳에 오지 않게 하소서

눅16:19-31

생명의 말씀

“내 형제 다섯이 있으니 저희에게 증거하게 하여 저희로 이 고통받는 곳에 오지 않게 하소서 아브라함이 가로되 저희에게 모세와 선지자들이 있으니 그들에게 들을찌니라”

어떤 목사님이 동창들 모임에 가서 예수 믿지 않으면 지옥가게 되니 예수를 믿으라고 전도를 했습니다. 그 때 친구들은 웃으면서 “야, 지옥이나 천국이 어디 있다고 그래?” 하면서 별로 귀담아 듣지 않았습니다. 한참 동안 전도를 하던 그 목사님은 친구들한테 “너희들 죽으면 지옥이나 가라!” 그랬답니다. 그 말은 들은 친구들은 얼굴이 벌개지면서 “내가 왜 지옥에 가냐?”고 반문했습니다. 그러자 그 목사님은 “너희들이 방금 전에 지옥이 없다고 그러지 않았느냐? 그런데 왜 두려워하고 화를 내느냐?”라고 말했다고 합니다.

여러분 중에도 천국이나 지옥의 실존에 대해 믿지 않는 사람들이 있을지 모르나 성경은 분명히 천국과 지옥의 실존에 대해 증거하고 있습니다. 특히 오늘 본문에 나오는 부자와 나사로의 비유는 우리에게 지옥의 실존을 너무나 생생하게 증거 해주고 있습니다. 본문 24절은 그곳이 뜨거운 곳이라고 말합니다. “내가 이 불꽃 가운데서 고민하나이다”. 뜨거운 유황불의 고통이 있는 곳입니다. 또한 23절 말씀을 볼 때 고통과 고민이 있는 곳입니다. 이 말은 의식이 있다는 것입니다. 그러나 가장 고통스러운 것은 지옥의 고통이 일시적으로 끝나는 것이 아니라 세세토록 밤과 낮을 가리지 않고 이어진다는 것입니다.

지옥이란 말은 히브리어로 ‘스올’이라 하는데 이는 ‘음부’라는 뜻이 있습니다. 죄 짓고 악한 사람이 가서 벌 받는 곳을 말합니다. 또한 죽은 자의 거주지를 말합니다. 신약에서는 ‘하데스’라는 말로서 1)무저갱 2)음부 3)지옥 등의 뜻이 있습니다. 무저갱이란 말은 바닥, 기초가 없는 곳을 말합니다. 천국의 기초는 의와 공의지만(시89:14) 지옥은 바닥도 없이 끝모를 타락과 어둠으로 가득차 있는 곳입니다. 이 고통 받는 곳에 가지 않으려면 어떻게 해야 할까요? 그것은 딱 한 가지 방법밖에 없습니다. 즉, 이 땅에 살아 있을 때 모세와 선지자와 같이 하나님의 사람을 통해 주시는 말씀을 듣고 회개하는 길 뿐입니다(:31). 이것이 부자와 나사로 비유의 핵심입니다.

천국은 복권당첨처럼 우연이나 행운에 의해 갈 수 있는 곳이 아닙니다. 지금 다른 사람들을 통해 들려주는 하나님의 음성에 귀를 기울이고 순종하는 것이 비결입니다. 오늘 하루 누구를 통해 들려주시든지 하나님의 음성을 듣고, 따를 수 있도록 기도하십시오.

27“He answered, ‘Then I beg you, father, send Lazarus to my family,28for I have five brothers. Let him warn them, so that they will not also come to this place of torment.’29“Abraham replied, ‘They have Mose sand the Prophets ; let them listen to them.’

A pastor went to a high school reunion and began to evangelize his friends telling them that they will go to hell if they do not believe in Jesus. After his friends heard this they started laughing and said “There is no such thing as hell or heaven!” and did not listen closely. The pastor tried evangelizing them for a while and finally condemned them to hell “When you guys die I hope you go to hell!” Then his friends were outraged and replied “why should we go to hell?” the pastor replied “didn’t you just say that there is no hell? Then why are you afraid and upset?”

Some of you may not believe in the existence of heaven and hell however the Bible clearly testifies of the existence of heaven and hell. The parable of the rich man and Lazarus in today’s main verse especially gives us a vivid recount of the existence of hell. In verse 24 it tells us hell is a fiery place; “I am in agony in this fire”. It is a place where the pain of the fiery flames exists. Furthermore, in verse 23 it is a place where sufferings and anxiety exist. This indicates that people remain conscious in hell and the most painful thing is that the sufferings of hell never stop and continue day and night for eternity.

The word hell in Hebrew is “Soo-ol” which refers to “genitals or private parts. This is a place where sinners and the wicked are punished. It is also a place of residence for the dead. In the New Testament hell is referred to as “Hades” and means 1) Apollyon 2) genitals and 3) hell. The word Apollyon refers to a floor that has no foundation. The foundations of heaven are righteousness and meritorious deeds (89:14) but hell doesn’t even have a floor and is filled with unending corruption and darkness. Then what must we do to not go to this place of torment? There is only one way. Thus, when we are alive on this earth we must listen to the Word of God that is given to us through the man of God, prophet like Moses and repent (:31). This is the essence of the parable of the rich man and Lazarus.

Prayer Title

Heaven isn’t a place that we can enter by chance or luck like winning the lottery. The secret to entering heaven is by listening to the voice of God that is delivered through other people and obeying. Pray that today you will be able to hear the voice of God through whoever it may be and abide by it.
