행7:55-60

생명의 말씀

“스데반이 성령이 충만하여 하늘을 우러러 주목하여 하나님의 영광과 및 예수께서 하나님 우편에 서신 것을 보고 말하되 보라 하늘이 열리고 인자가 하나님 우편에 서신 것을 보노라

한대 저희가 큰 소리를 지르며 귀를 막고 일심으로 그에게 달려들어 성 밖에 내치고 돌로 칠새 증인들이 옷을 벗어 사울이라 하는 청년의 발 앞에 두니라 저희가 돌로 스데반을 치니 스데반이 부르짖어 가로되 주 예수여 내 영혼을 받으시옵소서 하고 무릎을 꿇고 크게 불러 가로되 주여 이 죄를 저들에게 돌리지 마옵소서 이 말을 하고 자니라”

오늘 본문에는 초대교회 최초의 순교자 스데반 집사의 순교 장면이 그려져 있습니다. 스데반은 자기를 죽이려고 하는 수많은 유대인들을 상대로 의롭게 하나님의 뜻을 증거하고 있습니다. 그의 결론은 하나님의 뜻을 알지 못해 불순종했던 조상들이나 그 후손 유대인들이 성령을 거르시는 점에 있어서 공통된 존재라는 것입니다. 이에 마음이 찔린 유대인들은 귀를 막고 이를 갈며 달려들어 스데반을 돌로 치기에 이릅니다. 그러나 순교직전에 스데반은 하늘이 열리는 것과 보좌 우편에 계시던 주님께서 자리에서 벌떡 일어서시는 장면을 목도하게 됩니다. 놀라운 신앙의 체험을 맛본 스데반의 입에서 터져나온 고백은 놀랍게도 십자가 상에서 주님께서 온 세상을 향해 말씀하신 내용과 동일한 것이었습니다.

먼저 스데반은 자신의 영혼을 예수님께 부탁드렸습니다. 예수님께서 당신의 영혼을 아버지께 의탁하신 것과 마찬가지로 스데반은 자신의 영혼을 주님께 의탁하신 것입니다(눅23:46). 다음으로 스데반은 자신을 돌로 치는 자들에 대해 용서의 기도를 올렸습니다. 눅23:34절에서 저들이 알지 못해 저지른 잘못이오니 그 죄를 사하여 달라시던 예수님의 기도와 같은 기도를 올린 것입니다. 이것은 스데반의 순교가 즉흥적으로 이루어진 것이 아니라 그 이면에 예수님의 말씀과 교훈이 깔려있음을 보여주고 있습니다. 예수님의 십자가 정신이 살아서 스데반의 심령 속에 그대로 역사했던 것입니다.

이러한 스데반의 정신은 바울 사도의 신앙의 모범이 되었습니다. 그의 순교 현장 가까운 곳에서 스데반의 죽음을 목청 높혀 독려했던 인물이 바로 사도바울이었습니다. 그런 바울이 다메섹 도상에서 예수의 빛 앞에 포로가 된 이후 ‘스데반의 정신’에서 벗어남이 없는 길을 달려갔습니다. 숨지는 순간까지 아름답게 바울의 심금을 울렸던 스데반의 위대한 믿음의 모습, 돌에 맞아 온 몸이 만신창이가 된 상황 속에서도 하늘을 우러를 수 있는 위대한 신앙의 힘을 우리도 본받아야겠습니다.

스데반처럼 숨지기 전까지 감사와 찬송의 삶을 살아감으로 죽음 앞에서도 비굴하지 아니하고 순교의 제물로 영광돌릴 수 있는 한날을 위해 기도하십시오.

Acts 7:55-60

The Word of Life

55 But Stephen, full of the Holy Spirit, looked up to heaven and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing at the right hand of God. 56 “Look,” he said,“I see heaven open and the Son of Man standing at the right hand of God.”57 At this they covered their ears and, yelling at the top of their voices, they all rushed at him,58 dragged him out of the city and began to stone him. Meanwhile, the witnesses laid their coats at the feet of a young man named Saul.59 While they were stoning him, Stephen prayed, “Lord Jesus, receive my spirit.”60 Then he fell on his knees and cried out, “Lord, do not hold this sin against them.” When he had said this, he fell asleep.

Today’s main scripture reading depicts Stephan dying a martyr’s death. Stephan is righteously proclaiming the will of God towards the crowd of Jews who want to kill him. His conclusion is that the Jews who reject the Holy Spirit and their ancestors who did not know the will of God and disobeyed are the same beings. Upon hearing this, the Jews covered their ears and gnashing their teeth began to attack Stephan with stones. However, just before the moment of his death, Stephan witnesses the heavens opening up and sees the Lord who was sat at the right hand side stand up. After he experiences the astonishing taste of the spiritual world the confessions that come out of Stephan’s mouth is surprisingly the same as the Words that the Lord spoke to the entire world on the cross.

First, Stephan entrusted his spirit in Jesus. Just as Jesus entrusted his spirit to the Father, Stephan did the same and entrusted his spirit to the Lord (Luke 23:46). Next, Stephan gave a prayer of forgiveness for those who were stoning him. In Luke 23:34, Jesus prayed, “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.” Stephan gave the exact same prayer. This shows us that Stephan’s death didn’t happen spontaneously and it has underlying lessons of Jesus’ word. Jesus’ spirit on the cross had risen again and worked within Stephan’s spirit.

The attitude of Stephan became the spiritual role model for the apostle Paul. Apostle Paul was one of the people who were rallying for Stephan to be killed near the place of Stephan’s death. After Paul had become enslaved to the light of Jesus in front of the city of Damascus, he began to run the path where there was no escape from the ‘spirit of Stephan’. We must follow in the steps of Stephan’s great faith even while he was being stoned and until the moment of his death.

Prayer Title

Pray that like Stephan that by living a life of thanksgiving and praise, we won’t kneel at death and one day be able to glorify God as a martyr sacrifice.
