주 안에서 자녀들을 양육하며 사랑하는 법

생명의 말씀

“마땅히 행할 길을 아이에게 가르치라 그리하면 늙어도 그것을 떠나지 아니하리라”

어린시절은 인생의 기초를 닦는 중요한 시기입니다. 그러므로 어린 시절부터 올바른 자녀교육을 통해 훌륭하게 키우고자 하는 것은 모든 부모들의 소원입니다. 자녀들을 노엽게 하지 말고 ‘주의 교양과 훈계’로 양육하라고 하신 본문 말씀을 통해 성경적인 자녀교육의 두 가지 원리를 살펴보도록 하겠습니다.

첫째는 자녀들에게 올바른 민족의식을 심어줘야만 합니다. 개인만의 출세나 영화를 위해서가 아니라, 민족 전체를 돌아볼 수 있는 사명의식을 일깨워 줘야 합니다. 모세의 얼굴에서 ‘준수함’을 발견한 부모들은 3개월을 몰래 키우다 더 이상 숨길 수 없어 갈대 상자 속에 아이를 담아 나일 강에 띄워 보냈습니다. 그 아이를 바로의 딸 공주가 건져서 양자로 40년 동안 양육하였는데, 실질적으로는 그의 생모 요게벳이 유모가 되어 모세를 양육했던 것입니다. 모세의 어머니 요게벳은 모세에게 히브리 말과 문화와 역사, 그리고 히브리 민족의 하나님에 대해 가르쳤습니다. 그 결과 40세가 되어 모세는 민족을 돌아볼 생각을 하여 출애굽을 이끌었던 민족의 지도자가 될 수 있었던 것입니다(행7:23).

둘째는 자녀들에게 하나님의 말씀으로 올바른 권징을 해야 한다는 것입니다. 주 안에서 자녀를 양육한다는 것은 주의 말씀으로 자녀들을 권징하여 그 말씀에 순종하는 자녀로 기르는 것을 말합니다. 하나님께서도 자신의 백성 이스라엘에게 초달을 아끼지 않았습니다. 초달을 아끼고 말씀으로 권징하지 않은 결과 엘리의 두 아들들은 패역자가 되어 한날에 죽고 그 가정마저 풍비박살이 나고 않았습니까? 사무엘의 어머니 한나는 사무엘이 젖을 떼자 실로에 있는 여호와의 집으로 데려가 키웠습니다. 그 결과 사무엘은 어릴 때부터 여호와의 음성을 듣고 그 말씀대로 생활함으로 암흑기에 등불과도 같이 이스라엘 민족을 비추는 위대한 영적 지도자가 되었던 것입니다.

The Word of Life

Start children off on the way they should go, and even when they are old they will not turn from it.

The early years of a child is an important time in laying the foundations of the child’s life therefore every parents hope is to raise their children into great people through the right education. Let us look at two fundamental principles in educating our children through today’s main verse that tells us to nurture them through “the Lord’s teachings and discipline”.

First, we must instill in our children a correct sense of nationalism. We must awaken in them a heart a mandate that is able to look after their nation and not only live for their own individual success or honor. Moses parents saw that their son was special in the eyes of God so they raised Moses in hiding for three months. When they could no longer hide him they placed him in a basket made of reeds and sent it floating down the Nile River. The Pharaoh’s daughter found Moses and raised him as her son for 40 years; however in fact it was Moses’ birth mother Jochebed who had become a nanny and cared for him. Jochebed taught Moses the Hebrew language, its culture and history and about the God of the people of Israel. As a result Moses was able to become a leader who led the exodus (Acts 7:23).

Second, we must discipline our children with the Word of God. Nurturing our children in the Lord is done by disciplining our children through the Word so that they may mature into children who are obedient to His Word. God continuously taught and disciplined His people, the Israelites. Didn’t Eli’s two sons become rebels and die on the same day because Eli didn’t discipline them through the Word? Hannah took Samuel to the house of the Lord in Shiloh as soon as Samuel was able to eat solid food. Samuel was able to hear the voice of the Lord from a young age and lived according to it. Consequently, he was able to become a great spiritual leader who shone light upon the Israelites like a lamp.

Are you raising your children through the teachings and discipline of the Lord? Pray that you may be able to raise your children not only through love but through the discipline of the Word so that they may mature into people who are able to overcome themselves and have big vessels who are able to look after their nation.
