생명의 말씀

“헬라인이나 야만이나 지혜 있는 자나 어리석은 자에게 다 내가 빚진 자라”

사도바울의 자기 인식은 ‘빚진 자’입니다. 그는 본문에서 헬라인이나 야만이나, 지혜있는 자나 어리석은 자에게 다 빚을 졌다고 말하고 있습니다. 헬라어 원어로‘빚’은 ‘부채’라는 의미 외에 ‘죄’라는 뜻도 있습니다. 한마디로 사도바울은 모든 사람들에게 빚을 지고 죄를 범한 자라고 고백하고 있는 것입니다. 이는 다메섹 도상에서의 회심 전, 예수 그리스도를 부인하고 기독교인들을 핍박하는데 앞장섰던 자신의 행동에 대한 뼈아픈 자성의 표현이기도 합니다.

역설적으로, 사도바울은 하나님과 사람에게 너무나 큰 ‘빚’을 졌기에 그 빚을 갚기 위해 더더욱 열심히 일할 수 있게 되었습니다. 따라서 하나님 안에서는 오히려 ‘빚진 자’가 더욱 열심히 헌신하고 충성하는 것을 볼 수 있습니다. 누가복음 15장에서 유명한 탕자의 비유를 보면, 둘째 아들은 “내가 하늘과 아버지께 ‘죄’를 얻었사오니”(눅15:18)라고 말하였습니다. 여기서 ‘죄’는 곧 ‘빚’과 동의적으로 사용될 수 있습니다. 아버지는 이렇게 자신을 ‘죄인’으로, ‘빚진 자’로 고백하고 돌아오는 탕자를 진심으로 맞이했습니다. 그러나 큰아들은 이러한 아버지의 태도를 못마땅하게 여기며 여러 해 아버지를 섬긴 자신에게는 염소새끼 하나도 주지 않았다고 불평합니다(눅15:29).

사실 모든 사람들은 다 하나님 앞에 ‘빚진 자’입니다. 이를 깨닫고 스스로를 죄인으로 고백하며 인식할 때 겸손과 헌신으로 주 앞에 충성할 수 있습니다. 그러나 이를 깨닫지 못하고 자기의 의를 내세우게 되면 큰 아들과 같이 아버지께 불평하며 대드는 우를 범하게 됩니다. 주 안에서는 오히려 과거의 나의 잘못과 어리석음도 회개하기만 하면 더욱 크게 일할 수 있는 좋은 자양분이 되는 것입니다.

하나님 앞에서 여러분은 스스로를 어떻게 생각하고 있습니다. 사도바울과 같이 나 자신을 빚진 자로 여기는 가운데 빚을 갚기 위해 오늘 하루도 더더욱 헌신할 수 있도록 기도하십시오.

"I am under obligation both to Greeks and to barbarians, both to the wise and to the foolish."

Apostle Paul had in his mind that he was under obligation. According to the Bible verse, he said he is under obligation both to Greeks and to barbarians, both to the wise and to the foolish. In Greek, obligation means debt and sin. In other words, Apostle Paul confesses that he is indebted to everyone and has committed sins. In Damascus, before he converted, he denied Jesus Christ and persecuted Christians. He expressed great remorse for his past.

With this debt, Apostle Paul gave his best to repay it by devoting his life to the ministry. In Christ, it is noticed that debtors are more loyal and devoted to the ministry. Luke 15 speaks about the parable of the prodigal son. After returning, the second son confesses "Father, I have sinned against heaven, and in your sight” (Luke 15:18). The word “sinned” can be interchanged with “debt”. The father welcomed the prodigal son who had confessed that he was a sinner and debtor. However, the first son did not find the Father’s actions favorable. He complained how he never received a young goat after serving his father so many years (Luke 15:29).

Actually, everyone is indebted to God. When we acknowledge that we are sinners then we can be wholly devoted with humility and loyalty. However if we do not acknowledge we are sinner, then we are like the older son who complained to His father. When we confess our sin from the past and ask for repentance, then we can devote our self to the ministry.
