기도와 찬송의 신비한 무기

행16:25-26

생명의 말씀

“밤중쯤 되어 바울과 실라가 기도하고 하나님을 찬미하매 죄수들이 듣더라 이에 홀연히 큰 지진이 나서 옥터가 움직이고 문이 곧 다 열리며 모든 사람의 매인 것이 다 벗어진지라”

하나님의 말씀대로 행하고 말씀대로 살려다 보면 때로는 예상치 않은 환난과 핍박을 당하기도 합니다. 오늘 본문도 사도 바울이 복음을 전하는 과정에서 귀신을 쫓아내었는데, 그 귀신들린 자를 통해 점을 쳐서 많은 이득을 남겼던 주인이 거짓으로 고소하는 바람에 매를 맞고 옥에 갇히게 되었습니다. 사람들은 바울과 실라를 “깊은 옥에 가두고 발에 착고를 채웠으나”(16:24) 하나님께서는 기도하고 찬송하는 그들에게 “옥문이 열리고 발에 매인 것이 다 벗어지는”(행16:26) 은혜를 주셨습니다.

이와같이 놀라운 은혜가 임하게 된 이유는 무엇입니까? 본문 25절 말씀을 보면 바울과 실라가 하나님께 간절히 기도하고 찬송한 결과였습니다. 이를 볼 때 믿음의 기도와 찬송은 어떠한 어려움도 능히 해결할 수 있는 신비한 무기임을 알 수 있습니다. 특별히 여기서 주목할 것은 믿음의 기도와 찬송을 드린 바울과 실라뿐 아니라 “모든 사람의 매인 것이 다 벗어졌다”는 것입니다(행16:26). 여기서 ‘모든 사람’이란 바울과 실라뿐 아니라 함께한 모든 죄수들을 다 포함하는 말씀입니다. 그러면 다른 죄수들은 어떻게 해서 이러한 축복을 받을 수 있었을까요?

그 비결에 대해 본문 25절은 다음과 같이 말씀해 주고 있습니다. “죄수들이 듣더라!” 즉 바울과 실라가 기도하고 찬송하는 것을 나머지 죄수들이 싫어하거나 제지한 것이 아니라 “듣더라” 했습니다. ‘들었다’는 말은 그들이 기도와 찬송을 마음 속으로 함께 따라 부르고 기도와 찬송의 현장에 함께 동참했다는 것을 의미합니다. 이와같이 믿음의 기도와 찬송은 직접 기도하고 찬송하는 자 뿐 아니라 이를 듣고 믿음으로 화답하는 자들에게까지도 놀라운 은총이 주어짐을 알 수 있습니다. 그 결과 간수장의 집 사람들까지 예수를 영접하고 믿음으로 인한 큰 기쁨을 얻게 되었습니다.

The Mysterious Weapon of Prayer and Praise

The Word of Life

“About midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the other prisoners were listening to them. Suddenly there was such a violent earthquake that the foundations of the prison were shaken. At once all the prison doors flew open, and everyone’s chains came loose.”

When we try and act and live according to the Word of God we sometimes become subject to unexpected hardships and persecution. In today’s main verse we see the apostle Paul driving out demons during the process of sending the gospel. We see an owner gain a lot of profit through that demon possessed man who becomes imprisoned for false accusations. People put Paul and Silas “put them in the inner cell and fastened their feet in the stocks” (16:24) however God gave Paul and Silas the grace of “the prison doors opening and everyone’s chains coming loose” (Acts 16:26).

How did this amazing grace occur? When we read verse 25, we see it is the outcome of Paul and Silas’ earnest prayer and praise to God. When we see this we know that prayer and praise is a mysterious weapon that can easily solve all problems. We especially need to pay attention to the fact that not only Paul and Silas’ chains came loose but “everyone’s chains came loose”. Then how were these prisoners able to receive such blessings?

Verse 25 tells us the secret to receiving such blessings. “The other prisoners were listening” thus this tells us that the prisoners did not dislike or stop Paul and Silas from praying or praising and instead they “listened”. The fact that they “listened” means that they took part in prayer and sang along in praise within their hearts. Likewise faithful prayer and praise enables an amazing grace to come upon those who not only pray and praise but to those who hear and answer with faith. As a result the prisoners were able to receive Jesus and gain great joy through their faith.
