게네사렛 사람들

마14:34-36

생명의 말씀

“저희가 건너가 게네사렛 땅에 이르니 그 곳 사람들이 예수신 줄을 알고 그 근방에 두루 통지하여 모든 병든 자를 예수께 데리고 와서 다만 예수의 옷가에라도 손을 대게 하시기를 간구하니 손을 대는 자는 다 나음을 얻으니라”

오병이어의 기적을 행하신 후 예수님은 게네사렛 지방에 가셔서 말씀을 증거하셨습니다. 그런데 자기 땅에 오신 예수를 대하는 게네사렛 사람들의 태도는 오늘날 우리에게 많은 교훈을 던져주고 있습니다. 그들의 신앙은 다음과 같이 크게 세 가지로 요약할 수 있습니다.

첫째, 예수님을 알아봤다는 것입니다(마14:35). 이는 예수님의 존재와 사역을 깨닫고 이해했다는 말입니다. 흔히 신앙에는 3단계가 있다고 하는데 그중 첫번째 단계가 ‘아는 단계’입니다. 이 단계를 지나면 ‘믿는 단계’가 되고 마지막으로 피차에 맡기고 헌신할 수 있는 단계가 됩니다. 그러므로 처음 단계인 아는 단계에서 정확히 알아보는 것이 무엇보다 중요합니다.

둘째, 예수에 대해 그 근방에 두루 통지했다는 것입니다. 예수님이 오신 소문을 널리 전했고 그 결과 많은 사람들이 주께 나아올 수 있었습니다. 이는 요한복음 4장에서 수가성 여인의 경우와도 비슷합니다(요4:42). 비록 우리의 입술이 어눌하다 할지라도 단지 예수에 관한 소식을 두루 통지함으로써 사람들이 그분께 나아오도록 하기만 하면 됩니다. 그것이 바로 전도입니다.

끝으로 게네사렛 사람들은 예수님을 얼마나 귀하게 여겼는지 수많은 사람들을 예수님 앞으로 데리고 왔습니다. 믿음으로 예수의 옷자락에라도 손을 대게 했습니다. 단순히 병자들을 예수께 데리고 와서 알리고 통지한 것으로만 그친 것이 아니라 직접 예수께로 데리고 왔습니다. 끝까지 책임지는 게네사렛 사람들의 열정과 정성을 발견하게 됩니다.

우리도 게네사렛 사람들처럼 예수를 온전히 알고, 두루 통지할 뿐만 아니라 더욱 확실한 믿음을 가짐으로 모든 문제를 해결하는 역사가 있어야 할 것입니다.

The Word of Life

“When they had crossed over, they landed at Gennesaret. And when the men of that place recognized Jesus, they sent word to all the surrounding country. People brought all their sick to him and begged him to let the sick just touch the edge of his cloak, and all who touched it were healed.”

Jesus who carried out the miracle of the five loaves and two fish he went to a place called Gennesaret and testified the word. Today, the attitude of the people of Gennesaret towards Jesus teaches us many lessons. Their faith can be condensed into three parts.

First, they recognized Jesus (Matt 14:35). This tells us that they understood Jesus’ existence and ministry. We often say that there are three stages in our spiritual lives and the first stage is the “getting to know” stage. When we pass this stage we move onto the “believing” stage and finally we reach the stage where we can devote ourselves to each other. Therefore, it is crucial that we recognize Jesus correctly in the first stages of our spiritual lives.

Secondly, they sent word about Jesus to the surrounding countries and because they did this many people found out Jesus had come and were able to come forth to Jesus. This is similar to the situation of the woman in John 4:42. Although we may be inarticulate in speech by spreading the news of Jesus people will be able to come before him. This is evangelism.

Finally, the people of Gennesaret considered Jesus so precious that they brought a multitude of people before Jesus and with faith they touched the skirt of Jesus’ clothing. They did not merely bring the sick to Jesus and cease at telling people about Jesus but they personally brought people to him.

Through this we are able to discover the passion and devotion of the people of Gennesaret who upheld their responsibility until the end.
