갑절로 믿고 배나 받고

욥42:10

생명의 말씀

“욥이 그 벗들을 위하여 빌매 여호와께서 욥의 곤경을 돌이키시고 욥에게 그전 소유보다 갑절이나 주신지라”

성경의 인물 중 가장 많은 고난을 받은 사람으로 알려진 욥은 역설적으로 가장 열심히 하나님을 믿었던 사람 중에 하나입니다. 자녀를 위해 날마다 가정예배를 드렸고, 자기의 모든 재산을 다 빼앗기고 자신의 육신마저도 질병으로 고통당할 때도 하나님을 믿는 믿음이 전혀 흔들리지 않았습니다. 그래서 오늘 본문은 이러한 욥의 믿음의 결과 ‘갑절’의 축복을 받았다고 말씀하고 있습니다. 한마디로 ‘갑절로 믿고 갑절의 축복’을 받은 믿음의 사람인 것입니다. 하나님은 이스라엘 백성이 광야 생활을 할 때 이미 갑절의 축복을 주셨습니다.

출애굽기 16장은 광야생활 가운데 하나님께서 일용할 양식을 주셨던 ‘만나사건’을 기록하고 있는 책입니다. 하나님께서 만나를 주실 때 평소 5일 동안은 각 사람이 한 오멜씩 그날에 필요한 양식만을 거두게 하셨습니다. 또한 다음날까지 둔 것은 썩어서 먹을 수가 없었습니다. 그런데 안식일에는 만나가 내리지 않기 때문에 여섯째날에는 ‘두배’를 거두라고 말씀하셨습니다. 다음날 주실 축복을 ‘먼저’ 주셨던 것입니다. 그런데 신기하게도 6일째 거둔 양식은 다음 날이 돼도 상하지 않았습니다. 이 축복을 통해 이스라엘 백성들은 하나님의 말씀대로 믿고 살면 이러한 복을 받는다는 것을 깨닫게 됐습니다. 하나님의 말씀을 믿으면 먼저 주시는 선제적인 축복을 받게 되고, 믿지 못하면 모든 생활이 썩어진다는 것은 40년의 광야생활을 통해서 체득했던 것입니다.

오늘날도 마찬가지입니다. 주일은 하나님께 예배하고 기도하며 찬양하는 날입니다. 이 날은 온전히 지키기로 작정하고 준수하는 자에게는 하나님께서 갑절의 은혜를 주십니다(출16:29). 온전한 주일성수를 통해 이스라엘 백성들이 체험했던 ‘먼저 주시는 갑절의 축복’을 누리시기 바랍니다.

갑절로 믿고 배나 받은 욥처럼, 또한 광야 생활 가운데 여섯째날에 갑절의 만나를 받아 다음날까지 누리는 축복을 받은 이스라엘 백성처럼 오늘 하루도 갑절로 믿고 배나 축복을 받는 삶을 위해 기도하십시오.

Believe in Twice as much and Receive Twofold

Job 42:10

The word of life

“After Job had prayed for his friends, the LORD restored his fortunes and gave him twice as much as he had before.”

Job is well known as an individual in the bible to have received the most hardships and paradoxically one of the most fervent believers in God. He worshipped every day for his children and even when all his wealth was taken away from him and his body was being afflicted with illness his faith in God did not waver. Therefore in today’s main scripture it tells us that Job received the blessing of receiving twofold. In other words, he was a man of faith that “believed in twice as much and received twofold”. God had already given the Israelites twofold blessings when they were living in the wilderness.

Exodus chapter 16 records the incident where God gives “manna” as a daily source of food for the Israelites throughout their life in the wilderness. Normally when God gave manna for fice days He allowed each person to gather an omer each as much as they needed. Moreover, whatever they kept until the next day became rotten and was no longer edible. However, God didn’t rain down the manna on the Sabbath day so He commanded the Israelites to collect “twofold” on the sixth day. He had already given the blessings that He’d prepared to give the next day first but surprisingly, the manna that was collected on the six day did not go bad the next day. Through this blessing the Israelites realised that if they believe the Word of God properly they will be given such blessings. Through 40 years in the wilderness they had realised that if they believe God’s Word they will receive the first blessings of God and if they are unable to believe that all aspects of their lives will deteriorate.

It is the same in the present day. The Lords Day is the day we worship before God and pray and sing praises. God will give twofold blessings to those that decide to keep His day holy and conform to their determination (Exo 16:29). May you receive the twofold blessing by keeping the Sabbath day holy and experience the first blessings that the Israelites received.

Prayer title

Just as Job believed in twice as much and received twofold and like the Israelites in the wilderness who were given twofold of manna on the sixth day and received the blessing of being able to keep the manna until the next day, pray that today we can also believe in twofold and receive twice as much blessings upon our lives.
