“우리는 구원얻는 자들에게나 망하는 자들에게나 하나님 앞에서 그리스도의 향기니 이 사람에게는 사망으로 좇아 사망에 이르는 냄새요 저 사람에게는 생명으로 좇아 생명에 이르는 냄새라 누가 이것을 감당하리요” 

 

살아있는 꽃과 조화의 차이는 얼핏 봐선 구별하기가 어려울 정도로 요즘 나오는 조화들은 정교합니다. 옛날 이스라엘의 전설에 의하면 이집트 여왕이 솔로몬 왕에게 나아와 그 지혜를 시험해 보았다고 합니다. 정교하게 만든 꽃과 진짜 꽃을 가져다 놓고 이를 구별하라는 것입니다. 솔로몬 왕이 아무리 그 꽃들을 쳐다봐도 구분이 가질 않았습니다. 쉬운 문제로 생각했다가 땀을 흘리는 솔로몬 왕, 이번에는 이겼다며 의기양양해 하는 이집트 여왕의 표정이 교차될 때, 난데없이 벌 한 마리가 날아들어 왔습니다. 이 벌이 솔로몬 왕의 은혜에 보답하기 위해 나타나서는, 생화에 살짝 앉았다 날아갔던 것입니다. 이를 본 솔로몬 왕은 그것이 생화임을 알고 문제를 맞췄다는 이야기입니다.

꽃에 향기가 있기 때문에 나비나 벌이 다가오는 것처럼 우리도 예수 그리스도의 복음의 향기, 말씀의 향기, 은혜의 향기를 내뿜을 때 전도의 열매를 맺게 됩니다. 그것을 가리켜 오늘 본문에서는 생명에 이르는 냄새라고 말씀하고 있습니다(2:16). 짐승이건, 음식물이건 썩은 냄새는 사람의 인상을 찌푸리게 할 정도로 악취를 내뿜습니다. 냄새나는 곳을 향해서 가는 것이 아니라 오히려 피해서 도망칩니다. 나의 삶 가운데서 그런 사망의 냄새가 난다면 누가 나를 보고 그리스도께로 나오려고 하겠습니까? 여러분들의 삶에서는 어떠한 냄새가 납니까? 그리스도의 향기를 뿜는 성도는 향기를 통해 많은 사람들을 그리스도 앞으로 인도하는 사람입니다. 생명에 이르는 냄새입니다. 이처럼 하나님께서 기뻐하시는 향기를 날마다 내뿜는 사람이 되기 위해서는 무엇보다도 기도의 향기가 있어야 합니다. 계5:8절과 8:3-4절 말씀을 볼 때 성도들의 기도를 ‘향’이라 말씀합니다. 방안에 향을 피워놓으면 온 방안이 향 냄새로 가득해지듯, 우리의 삶에 기도의 향을 끊이지 않고 피울 때 우리의 삶 전체가 아름다운 향을 내뿜는 삶이 되는 것입니다.

Let Us Become an Aroma That Pleases God

2 Cor 2:12-17

The Word of Life

“For we are to God the pleasing aroma of Christ among those who are being saved and those who are perishing. To the one we are an aroma that brings death; to the other, an aroma that brings life. And who is equal to such a task?”

These days, artificial flowers are made with such precision that it is hard for one to discern whether or not it is real without looking closely. According to an old Israeli legend, it is recorded that the princess of Egypt went to King Solomon and tested his wisdom. Likewise we need to be able to discern the real flower from the artificial flower. No matter how hard Solomon looked, he could not tell the difference of the flowers. At first Solomon thought it’d be an easy task and while he was pondering and the queen of Egypt was confident that she had won Solomon a bee flew in out of nowhere. This bee had appeared to repay the grace that it had received from Solomon and sat on top of the real flower and flew off. Solomon saw this and knew that flower was the real one and was able to answer the question.

Just as butterflies or bees are drawn to the scent of flowers, when we let off the aroma of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the aroma of the Word and the aroma of blessings we will be able to bear the fruit of evangelism. Today’s main scripture refers to that scent as “an aroma that brings to life” (2 Cor 2:16).

Whether it is an animal or food scraps, the smell of foul odours that they let off make our face squint and instead of going towards the bad odour we find ourselves running away from it. Then if our lives let off an odour of death, who will see us and want to go forth to Christ? What scent is your life letting off? The saint who lets off the aroma of Christ is the one who leads many men before Christ. It is the scent that leads to life. Rev 5:8 and 8:3-4 tells us that the prayer of saints is an “aroma”. Just like the scent of incense fills our room when we burn incense, when the aroma of prayer does not cease and continues to fill our lives, our entire lives will become a life that let off a beautiful aroma.
