생명의 말씀

“이에 예수께서 제자들에게 이르시되 아무든지 나를 따라 오려거든 자기를 부인하고 자기 십자가를 지고 나를 좇을 것이니라”

‘자기’ 십자가를 지고 가라는 것은 단체가 아니라 한 개인의 구원체험을 말해줍니다. 개인주의는 이기주의적이며 자기중심적인 사상을 말하지만, 여기서 말하는 ‘자기’란 하나님 앞에 홀로 선 ‘개인’을 말합니다. 즉, 창조 본연의 독립적 인격체를 가리키는 말입니다. 하나님께서 인류를 창조하실 때도 단체로 창조하신 것이 아니라 한 사람 한 사람 개인을 창조하셨듯이 십자가에 옛 사람을 못 박고 십자가를 짊어지고 가는 사람도 ‘막연한 다수’가 아니라 하나님 앞에 선 ‘개인’입니다. 주님의 십자가는 개인의 십자가요 나를 위한 십자가입니다. 그러므로 십자가는 옛 사람을 장사지내는 장소인 동시에 ‘새 사람’, 곧 ‘새로운 개인화’를 위해서 창조해내는 산실입니다.

또한 ‘자기 십자가’는 ‘자기 성화’에 필수적인 표식임을 알 수 있습니다. 십자가 앞에 온전히 자신을 내어 맡기고, 나를 위하여 몸을 버리신 하나님의 아들, 나의 구주에게로 돌아가는 회개와 소망과 신앙의 이정표가 바로 십자가이기 때문입니다. 그래서 사도바울은 이 십자가 앞에 날마다 못 박고, 날마다 자신의 옛 사람을 죽이는 가운데 성화의 길을 걸었습니다(고전15:31). 이러한 십자가 진리를 깨닫고 자신을 가리켜 '죄인 중에 괴수'라 표현하였습니다(딤전1:15). 그러므로 자기 십자가는 자기 성화의 표식이 됩니다.

끝으로 자기 십자가는 자기 사명의 표식이기도 합니다. 즉 ‘자기’ 십자가를 짊어지라는 것은 개인이 감당해야할 사명을 뜻하는 말이기 때문입니다. 사도바울은 이 사실을 깨닫고 ‘부득불 십자가를 자랑하는 삶’을 살겠다고 다짐했습니다. 그러면서 롬1:14절에 “나는 십자가 복음에 빚진 자라”고 고백했습니다. 그래서 헬라인이나 유대인이나 이방인이나 가릴 것 없이 빚을 갚기 위해 열심히 복음을 전했던 것입니다.

나의 십자가를 인식하고 올바로 짊어지는 것은 나의 성화에 필수적인 과정입니다. 또한 사명완수의 시금석이기도 합니다. 오늘 하루도 사도바울과 같이 십자가만을 자랑하고, 십자가 복음만을 전할 수 있도록 기도하십시오.

The Word of Life

"Then Jesus said to His disciples, "If anyone wishes to come after Me, he must deny himself, and take up his cross and follow Me."

In the phrase, “he must deny himself” the word “himself” states not a group that is taking the cross but an individual. It is an individual with self-interest and focused on oneself, however the word “himself” in the scripture reading is one who is standing before God. Upon creation, he was given free will and had the independent character. When God created the universe, He did not create in groups but one person at a time. Therefore, each person needs to take up his own cross and nail himself to the cross. The cross of the Lord is an individual cross. When the old self is nailed to the cross, a “new person” is born and a new “individual” is created.

One’s own “cross” is an essential religious mark. At the cross, you must lay all of yourself; it is a symbolism of faith where Jesus the Son of God gave up His own life allowing us to return to God with repentance and hope. Apostle Paul gave up his life daily to this cross and died daily to himself (1 Corinthians 15:31). He understood the truth of the cross and describe it as “requirement of sinners” (1 Timothy 1:15). The cross is a religious symbol for each person.

The cross also symbolizes the duty that God has given each of us. When Jesus said to “take up his cross”, He is telling us to perform and complete our role that God has given us. Apostle Paul understood this and confessed he was proud of the “beautiful cross”. In Galatians 6:14, Apostle Paul stated “But may it never be that I would boast, except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ.” Therefore, he was obliged to spread the gospel of light to the Greeks, Jewish, and other foreign nations (Romans 1:14).

"Prayer Request"

It is important to recognize and pick up our own cross, as it is a requirement of faith. It encourages us to fulfill the role that God has given each of us. Let us pray that we can boast only of the cross and spread its gospel as Apostle Paul did.
