마른 땅에서 나온 줄기같이

생명의 말씀

“그는 주 앞에서 자라나기를 연한 순 같고 마른 땅에서 나온 줄기 같아서 고운 모양도 없고 풍채도 없은즉 우리의 보기에 흠모할 만한 아름다운 것이 없도다”

이사야 선지자는 주님의 생애를 한마디로 정의하기를 “마른 땅에서 나온 줄기”라고 하였습니다. 어린 싹이 마른 땅을 뚫고 나오는 과정을 생각해 볼 때, 이는 극한 수난의 짐을 홀로 담당하신 주님의 대속의 사역을 묘사한 말씀이기도 합니다.

습기가 있는 땅은 싹이 나올 때도 곱게 나오지만, 마른 땅은 습기가 없는 땅이라 아주 힘들게 올라오며 고운 모양이나 풍채도 없고 흠모할 만한 아름다운 것이 전혀 없다고 말씀하고 있습니다. 또한 주님은 어디를 가도 환영을 받지 못하고 멸시와 천대, 고통을 당하셨습니다. 나실 때도 여관에 자리가 없어서 마굿간에서 태어나시고 말 구유에 누우셔야만 했습니다. 낳자마자 헤롯왕의 학살을 피해 애굽으로 피신해야만 했습니다. 출산 후 몸을 추스르기도 전에 애굽으로 피신하셨으니 우리 주님의 생애는 출생부터 수난의 생애였던 것입니다.

이사야 선지자는 이러한 주님의 생애를 ‘멸시’와 ‘질고’로 표현하고 있습니다. ‘멸시’란 사람들에게 업신여김을 받는 것입니다. ‘질고’는 질병과 고통을 뜻하는 것으로 인류의 모든 질병과 죄악을 홀로 담당하셨습니다. 우리의 죄악, 죄악의 결과로 빚어진 못된 질병까지도 그분은 기꺼이 짊어지신 것입니다. 이를 위해 창조주가 피조물의 형상을 입고 세상에 오셨습니다. 만물의 주인이 만물의 종이 돼서 오셨습니다. 광명 자체가 광명 없는 어둠에 온 것 자체가 십자가요 죽음입니다. 죄악된 인간 피조물이 밟는 땅을 하나님이 밟으셨습니다.

그럼에도 주님의 생애는 나사렛 출신이라고 무시당하였으며(요7:52), 가족들까지도 귀신 들렸다고 잡으러 왔습니다. 이단이라는 굴레를 씌워 냉수 한 그릇 대접하지 않았습니다(마10:42). 심지어 하나님의 아들이 세금 낼 돈이 없어서 길에 잡혀있어야 했습니다(마17:25-27). 천상천하에 가장 고귀한 이름, 예수 그리스도께서 이처럼 마른 땅에서 나온 줄기같이 멸시와 천대를 당하셨습니다. 바로 나와 온 인류의 죄악을 걸머지기 위해서 말입니다.

나의 질고와 허물을 걸머지기 위해 고난 당하신 주님의 모습은 마치 마른 땅을 뚫고 나온 줄기같이 풍채도 없고 흠모할만한 아름다움도 없다고 하셨습니다. 나를 위해 기꺼이 고난의 길을 걸으신 주님의 희생의 삶을 본받을 수 있도록 기도하십시오.

Like a Root Out of Parched Ground

Isaiah 53:2

The Word of Life

"For He grew up before Him like a tender shoot, And like a root out of parched ground; He has no stately form or majesty That we should look upon Him, Nor appearance that we should be attracted to Him."

Prophet Isaiah described the life of Jesus as “like a root out of parched ground”. If you can imagine when young root comes out of a parched ground there is tremendous pain – this depicts the life of Jesus.

A root will easily rise out from a ground with moisture, however a root will have a difficult time out a parched ground and its form will be distorted. Likewise, wherever He Jesus went, He was ridiculed and suffered pain. From the beginning of His birth, there was no room at the inn, He was born in a barn and placed in manger. Joseph, Mary, and baby Jesus fled to Egypt to escape Herod’s killings of the babies as soon as Jesus was born. Before Mary and baby Jesus could heal, they fled to Egypt. This is the beginning of Jesus’ life of suffering.

Prophet Isaiah described the life of our Lord as “despised” and grieved”. Despised is when people hold you to contempt. Grieved is when you are ill and in pain, Jesus took all our illnesses and pain away from us. The result of our sins forced Jesus to bear our illnesses. That is why the Creator came in the form of man to this world. The master of the universe became a servant of universe. When the light came to the darkness – this was the crucifixion and death. Jesus stepped where sinners walked.

Jesus was belittled because He was from Nazareth (John 7:52). Even His own family came to take Him away because they thought He was crazy. Not even a cup of water was given to Him because of fear of extradition (Matthew 10:42). Son of God was taken to the side because He did not have any money for taxes (Matthew 17:25-27). The most precious name on this entire universe, Jesus Christ, lived a life of suffering like the root out of parched ground. He suffered because our sins.

"Prayer Request"

Jesus came to bear our grief and faults. He lived a life of suffering like a root out of parched ground, where His form was despicable. Let us pray that we can follow the steps of Jesus whose life was filled with suffering and sacrifices.
