죄 씻음의 축복, 할례

창17:10-11

생명의 말씀

“너희 중 남자는 다 할례를 받으라 이것이 나와 너희와 너희 후손 사이에 지킬 내 언약이니라 너희는 양피를 베어라 이것이 나와 너희 사이의 언약의 표징이니라”

이삭과 이스마엘의 차이가 있다면 이삭은 아브라함이 할례를 받은 이후에 얻은 아들인 반면, 이스마엘은 할례받기 전 태어난 아들입니다. 그러면 아브라함에게 있어서 ‘할례’는 어떠한 의미를 지닐까요? 창세기 17장 본문에서 하나님은 아브라함에게 “모든 남자는 다 할례를 받으라”고 명령하고 있습니다. 이 명령대로 아브라함은 99세때, 이스마엘이 13세때 그 양피를 베었다고 성경은 말씀하고 있습니다(창17:24-25). 할례란 남자의 ‘양피’를 차돌로 베어내는 의식을 말합니다. 여기서 ‘양피’를 뜻하는 히브리어 ‘바사르’는 ‘남자의 생식기’뿐 아니라 ‘살, 육체, 혈육, 혈기’ 등 다양한 의미를 지닌 단어입니다. 그렇다면 아브라함에게 ‘양피’를 베는 할례의식을 이삭의 출생 전에 명령한 의미는 무엇일까요?

그것은 아브라함의 불신의 피, 죄악의 피를 빼어내어 정결한 자손을 얻고자 하는 하나님의 구원섭리의 방편인 것입니다. 하나님이 인도하신 땅에 갔으면서도 기근이 두려워 애굽으로 내려가고 만 아브라함! ‘네 몸에서 날 후사’를 약속하셨음에도 임의대로 여종을 취하여 이스마엘을 낳고 약속의 성취인양 기뻐하는 아브라함의 불순종과 연약한 믿음을 해결하지 않고는 결코 약속의 자손, 경건한 의의 자손을 얻을 수 없기 때문입니다. 그래서 하나님은 아브라함을 책망하는 대신 ‘할례’라는 제도를 명하셔서 지금까지의 모든 불신과 죄악을 말끔히 씻어 의인의 반열로 올려 주셨습니다. 그 터전 위에서 하나님은 이삭을 허락하셨던 것입니다.

구약에서 할례란 단순히 양피를 베어 피를 빼어내는 의식을 넘어서서 진정으로 마음 가죽을 베고 ‘회개’하는 축복의 표징으로써역할을 했습니다(렘4:4). 아브라함의 범죄의 본질이 육체적인 범죄요 그 뿌리가 ‘육신’에 있었기에 할례는 이를 회복하는 축복의 수단이 되었습니다. 그러므로 이제 진정한 할례란 단순히 육신의 할례가 아니라 마음 중심으로 회개하며 죄악에서 돌이키는 변화된 삶에 있는 것입니다(롬2:28-29).

형식적인 예배보다 진정으로 마음 가죽을 베는 참 할례를 통해 하나님의 축복받은 자녀로 거듭나는 하루가 되기를 기도하십시오. 

The Blessing of the Washing Away of Sin: Circumcision

Genesis 17:10-11

10 This is my covenant with you and your descendants after you, the covenant you are to keep: Every male among you shall be circumcised. 11You are to under go circumcision, and it will be the sign of the covenant between me and you.

The difference between Isaac and Ishmael was that Isaac was a son whom Abraham received after the circumcision while Ishmael was a son that was born to Abraham prior to the circumcision. Then what significance does the “circumcision” have to Abraham? In Genesis 17 God commands Abraham that “every male among him shall be circumcised” and according to this commandment when Abraham was 99 and Ishmael was 13 the Bible tells us that Abraham removed his foreskin. (Gen 17:24-25).

Circumcision refers to the act of removing a males’ foreskin using a stone. The Hebrew word for “foreskin” is “Bassar” which not only means “the male reproductive organ” but can also mean “flesh, body, family (one’s own flesh and blood), vigor etc. Then what significance does the face that Abraham was commanded to carry out the circumcision before the birth of Isaac?

That was God’s method of redemptive providence in gaining pure descendants by removing Abraham’s blood of disbelief and sin. Abraham went to the land that God led hi, into however, fearful of the famine he fled to Egypt and although God had promised him “a descendant that would come from his body” he went ahead and slept with his maidservant and gave birth to Ishmael thinking that it was the fulfillment of God’s promise. Without solving Abraham’s disobedience and weak faith, holy and righteous descendants could not be conceived.

Therefore instead of rebuking Abraham God commanded him to carry out a circumcision in order to wash away all his past and present disbelief and sin and uplifted him onto the ranks of the righteous. Upon that foundation God gave him Isaac.

Circumcision in the Old Testament not only was the physical act of removing the foreskin of a male penis but also signified the blessing of searing ones heart and giving true repentance (Jer 4:4). The nature of Abraham’s sin was physical hence the root of that sin was within the flesh and circumcision became the method of restoration and blessing. Therefore, the true circumcision is not merely a circumcision of one’s flesh but is within the changed life of one who has repented with the centre of one’s heart and turned away from sin (Rom 2:28-29).

Pray that rather than through idle worship, by carrying out a true circumcision of the heart that you we may be reborn as blessed children of God.
