겨자씨 한 알의 믿음

마17:20

생명의 말씀

“가라사대 너희 믿음이 적은 연고니라 진실로 너희에게 이르노니 너희가 만일 믿음이 한 겨자씨만큼만 있으면 이 산을 명하여 여기서 저기로 옮기라 하여도 옮길 것이요 또 너희가 못할 것이 없으리라”

오늘 본문의 말씀은 제자들이 ‘겨자씨 한알’만큼의 믿음도 없음을 책망하는 말씀이기도 합니다. 그러면 예수님은 왜 제자들의 믿음을 ‘겨자씨’와 비교하여 책망하고 있는 것일까요?

그것은 겨자씨가 가장 작지만 생명이 있는 씨이기 때문입니다. 겨자씨는 이스라엘에서 나는 식물의 씨앗 중 가장 작은 씨앗입니다. 그러나 씨앗이 아무리 작다 해도 그 속에는 ‘생명’이 들어있기 때문에 땅에 떨어지면 씨에 비해 엄청난 규모로 성장하게 됩니다. 그러므로 우리의 판단은 대상의 크기나 외형을 기준으로 해서는 안 되고, 그 안에 있는 생명의 유무에 근거해야합니다. 가장 작은 겨자씨이지만 그 속에 생명이 있기에, 그 생명의 힘은 기필코 뚫고 나오는 능력이 있습니다. 하나님의 말씀도 겨자씨와 같습니다. 사람이 보기에는 작고 보잘 것 없는 것 같지만 그 속에 ‘생명’이 있기에 권세와 능력이 있습니다. 이것이 말씀의 본질입니다. 그래서 사도바울은 “나도 내 속에서 능력으로 역사하시는 이의 역사를 따라 힘을 다하여 수고하노라”(골1:29)고 하였던 것입니다.

그러면 왜 예수를 믿으면서도 생명의 산 역사가 없을까요? 그것은 ‘죄’때문이라고 성경은 말씀하고 있습니다. “오직 너희 죄악이 너희와 너희 하나님 사이를 내었고 너희 죄가 그 얼굴을 가리워서 너희를 듣지 않으시게 함이니”(사59:1-3)라는 말씀이 이를 잘 대변해 줍니다. 또한 사람들이 하나님을 믿되 자기 지혜와 생각대로 믿기 때문입니다. 말할 때마다 제것으로 말하고(요8:44), 말을 지어냅니다(계21:8). 이것이 바로 자기 생각대로 믿는 것입니다. 그러나 ‘겨자씨 믿음’은 그 어떤 것도 섞이지 않은 순수한 믿음, 절대 의심하지 않는 믿음, 하나님의 말씀을 사모하며 행하는 온전한 믿음을 가리킵니다. 이러한 믿음이 있을 때 그 속에 있는 생명의 역사가 나의 삶 속에서 펼쳐지게 되는 것입니다.

오늘 하루도 여러분과 하나님 사이에 가로 놓여있는 죄악의 담을 허물고 하나님께 나아와 겨자씨같이 작지만 생명의 능력을 체험할 수 있기를 위해 기도하십시오.

The Faith of a Mustard Seed

Matt 17:20

The Word of Life

He replied, “Because you have so little faith. Truly I tell you, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you.”

Today’s main verse is a word that rebukes the disciples for not even having faith the size of a mustard seed. Why is Jesus using a mustard seed to compare the disciples’ faith? It is because although a mustard seed may be a small seed it has life. In Israel the mustard seed is one of the smallest plant seeds but however small a seed may be within it is “life” so if it falls to the ground it will grow by a huge amount.

Therefore the subject of our judgment mustn’t be based on the greatness in size or outwardly appearance but based on the life that is within. A mustard seed is tiny however within it is life and that life has the power to pierce through. The Word of God is also like a mustard seed. In the eyes of man it may seem small and insignificant but within it is “life” therefore it has authority and power. This is the essence of the Word. Thus, the apostle Paul confessed in Colossians 1:29, “To this end I strenuously contend with all the energy Christ so powerfully works in me.”

Then why is there no living work of life even though we believe in Jesus? The Bible tells us it is due to sin. Isaiah 59:1-3 explains this well, “But your iniquities have separated you from your God; your sins have hidden his face from you, so that he will not hear”. Moreover, it is because people believe in God but do so with their wisdom and thoughts. Whenever they open their mouths they speak no truth (John 8:44) and of falsehood (Rev 21:8). However, the faith of a mustard seed is a pure faith that hasn’t been tainted by anything else, it is a faith that never doubts and is a complete faith that yearns for and acts according to the Word of God.

Prayer Title

Pray that today you will be able to break down the walls of sins that block you from God and come forth to God and experience the power of life that is within a small mustard seed.
