기억하고 가르치라

신32:7, 욜1:3

생명의 말씀

“옛날을 기억하라 역대 연대를 생각하라 ... 너희는 이 일을 너희 자녀에게 고하고 너희 자녀는 자기 자녀에게 고하고 그 자녀는 후시대에 고할 것이니라”

“과거를 기억하라, 현재를 살라, 미래를 확신하라”. 이 글은 이스라엘의 박물관의 벽에 새겨진 문장입니다. 수많은 고난과 핍박의 역사 속에서 그들이 생존하며 번영할 수 있었던 이유는 이처럼 과거에 대한 기억과 미래에 대한 비전에서 찾을 수 있습니다. 이러한 사상은 구약성경의 메시지인 “기억하고 가르치라”는 말씀에서 기인한 것입니다. 과거의 죄악과 고난을 기억하고, 후대에게 가르침으로 미래의 소망이 약속된다고 말씀하고 있기 때문입니다.

우리가 기억해야 할 것은, 첫째 ‘애굽에서 나온 날’을 기억해야 합니다(출13:3). 이는 종 되었던 집에서 나온 것으로 다시는 남의 나라, 이방 민족에게 종노릇 하지 말 것에 대한 다짐과 하나님의 구원역사의 은총에 대한 망각을 경계하는 권면입니다.

두 번째는 하나님께서 이스라엘의 족장들에게 행하신 일을 기억해야 합니다. “주의 종 아브라함과 이삭과 이스라엘을 기억하소서”(출32:13)라는 말씀과 같이 이스라엘은 족장들에게 행하신 하나님의 약속과 은총을 기억함으로써 하나님과 언약관계를 맺고 살아가는 존재입니다.

세 번째는 하나님과 맺은 언약을 기억해야 합니다(레26:45). 끝으로 광야에서 하나님이 조상들에게 행하신 일을 기억해야 합니다(신7:18). 만나를 내려주시고(시78:24), 반석을 쪼개시고 깊은 수원에서 물을 흡족히 마시우셨으며(시78:15), 사십년 동안 의복이 해어지지 아니하였고 발이 부릍지 않게 해주심으로(신8:4) 결핍함이 없게 해주셨던 하나님의 은혜와 사랑뿐 아니라 하나님을 원망하고 거역함으로 책망 받고 심판받았던 모든 소행들을 기억함으로, 조상들의 죄를 반복하지 말고 하나님의 은혜와 사랑에 감사하라는 의도에서 잊지 말라는 것입니다.

‘기억’의 중요성은 사람의 마음에 회개를 일으켜 마음을 돌아서게 합니다. 베드로는 “네가 세 번 나를 부인하리라”하신 예수님의 말씀이 “기억되어 생각하고”(막14:72) 울면서 회개했습니다. 이처럼 하나님의 기사이적과 말씀을 마음 판에 새기고 기억하고 있으면 그것이 우리를 돌이키게 하는 회개의 능력을 가져옵니다. 그래서 과거의 사건들을 ‘기억’할뿐 아니라 자녀들에게 부지런히 가르치고 전수해서 온전한 믿음의 계승을 이루어야 하는 것입니다.

망각은 멸망을 가져오되 반복해서 가져옵니다. 성경을 통해 올바른 과거를 기억하고 다음세대에게 가르침으로 하나님께서 주시는 축복을 받아 누리는 한 날이 되길 위해 기도하십시오.

The Word of Life

“Remember the days of old; consider the generations long past. Ask your father and he will tell you, your elders, and they will explain to you.”

“Tell it to your children, and let your children tell it to their children, and their children to the next generation.”

“Remember the past, live today, and be certain of the future”. These are the words that are engraved in the walls of a museum in Israel. We are able to find the reason the Israelites were able to remain alive and prosper throughout their history of much suffering and persecution within the memories of the past and their vision for the future. Such an ideology has come from the message in the Old Testament “to remember and to teach”. It is because the Old Testament is telling us that by remembering the sins and sufferings of the past and teaching it to the latter generations the future hope is promised.

We must first remember “the day they came out of Egypt” (Exo 13:3). This was a day of exodus not only from the house in which they were slaves but also a lesson that teaches and warns the Israelites that they mustn’t forget the promise they made to themselves to never again become a slave in a foreign land to an alien people as well as the grace of God’s work of salvation.

Secondly we must remember the work that God carried out for the leaders of the tribes of Israel. Just as God commanded the leaders of the tribes of Israel in Exodus 32:13 “remember your servants Abraham, Isaac and Jacob” we must remember the promise and grace that God gave to the leaders of the tribes of Israel and live our lives establishing a covenantal relationship with God.

Thirdly we must remember the covenant that God has made with us (Jer 26:45) and finally we must remember the work that God carried out in the wilderness towards the forefathers (Deut 7:18). He rained down manna (Psa 78:24), split the rock allowing them to drink plentifully from the deep springs (Psa 78:15), kept their garments from wearing or tearing for 40 years nor their feet from getting blisters (Deut 8:4). We must not only remember the grace and love of God that made everything plentiful but also remember the acts of resent towards God and disobedience that resulted in rebuking and judgment so that we don’t repeat the sins of our forefathers and give thanks for the grace and love of God

The importance of “remembrance” triggers repentance in a person’s heart and changes their heart. Peter “remembered and thought about” (Mark 14:72) Jesus words that he would deny Jesus three times and repented in tears.

Prayer Title

Forgetfulness brings destruction repeatedly. Pray that today you will be able to remember the correct past and by teaching the next generation be able to receive the blessing that God bestows upon your life.
