바람이 거스려 와도

마14:22-24,33

생명의 말씀

“예수께서 즉시 제자들을 재촉하사 자기가 무리를 보내는 동안에 배를 타고 앞서 건너편으로 가게 하시고 무리를 보내신 후에 기도하러 따로 산에 올라가시다 저물매 거기 혼자 계시더니 배가 이미 육지에서 수리나 떠나서 바람이 거슬리므로 물결을 인하여 고난을 당하더라... 배에 함께 오르매 바람이 그치는지

인생은 유라굴로 광풍이 몰아치는 바다를 항해하는 것처럼 힘들고 위태롭다고 합니다. 그러나 어떠한 광풍이 부는 바다라 해도 “안심하라 내니 두려워말”는 주님의 말씀만을 믿고 가면 염려가 없습니다. 마침내 소원의 항구에 도달하는 기쁨을 맛보게 됩니다. 오늘 본문을 통해 아무리 세찬 바람이 거스려 온다 해도 믿음으로 이기시기 바랍니다.

첫째, 주님께서 항해를 명하셨음을 기억해야 합니다. 갈릴리 바다로 제자들에게 항해를 명하신 분은 주님이십니다. 이는 주께서 책임을 져주신다는 것을 뜻합니다. 제자들이 세상 물결에 휩싸일까봐 군중들과 충동적인 세상의 허영으로부터 분리하고자 항해를 명하셨습니다. 그 결과 제자들이 만난 것은 풍랑이었습니다. 죽을 고난에 빠진 것입니다. 그러나 이것도 주님의 뜻입니다. 세상 물질에 휩싸여 손상당하는 영혼을 주님은 자연의 풍랑을 통해 미리 체험케 하심으로써 제자들의 마음을 다듬어 주었던 것입니다. 이처럼 예수님께서 보내신 길에도 때로는 풍랑이 일기도 합니다. 하지만 믿고 가기만 하면, 주님께서 명하셨기에 반드시 책임져 주신다는 것을 믿는 믿음으로 항해하기만 하면 어떤 풍랑도 이길 수 있습니다.

둘째, 주님께서는 지금도 나를 위해 기도하고 계심을 기억해야 합니다. 제자들을 무리에게서 떼어내신 후 풍랑이 이는 물결을 바라보시고 주님은 그들을 위해 기도하셨습니다(:23). 이처럼 예수님은 우리를 홀로 위험의 현장에 두시지 않고 끝까지 기도로 동행하시고 책임져 주시는 분입니다.

셋째, 주님께서는 나를 향해 물 위로 걸어오고 계심을 기억해야 합니다. 산에서 기도하시던 주님은 위경에 빠진 제자들을 구하기 위해 지금 물 위를 달려오고 계십니다. 그것도 한밤중에 말입니다. 제자들은 두려움과 고난에 지쳐 낙심하고 있지만 주님은 전혀 동요함이 없이 물 위를 딛고 서계십니다. 배에 올라타는 순간 바람과 파도가 잔잔해졌습니다(:32). 나아가 그분을 믿는 믿음만 있으면 베드로처럼 물 위에 서서 어떤 역경과 환난의 풍랑이 불어와도 맞서서 승리할 수 있는 능력을 주십니다.

여러분은 지금 어떤 풍랑과 파도와 맞서 싸우고 있습니까? 그것이 아무리 크고 위협적이라 할지라도 함께해 주시는 주님의 보호와 능력을 믿는 믿음으로 극복하고 승리하기를 위해 기도하십시오.

Even When the Wind Comes at Us

Matthew 14:22-24, 33

The Word of Life

“Immediately Jesus made the disciples get into the boat and go on ahead of him to the other side, while he dismissed the crowd. After he had dismissed them, he went up on a mountainside by himself to pray. Later that night, he was there alone, and the boat was already a considerable distance from land, buffeted by the waves because the wind was against it.”

Life is said to be as difficult and dangerous as heading out to an ocean that is being ravaged by violent waves and gusts of wind. However no matter how violent the winds, if we head onwards just believing the Words of the Lord that tell us “to not distress or fear”, we will be able to taste the joy of reaching the port. Through today’s main scripture reading may you overcome even the most violent gusts of winds that come your way by faith.

First, we must remember that the Lord commanded the seas. It was the Lord who commanded the disciples to head to the Sea of Galilee. This signifies that God will be responsible for them. He commanded them to go because he was worried that the disciples will be swept away by the waves of the world and to separate them from the vanities of the world. As a result the disciples were faced with wind and storms. They were faced with a hardship that put their lives at risk. However, this was also the will of God. By making the disciples experience the spirit of getting damaged as a result of being swept away by the materialistic things of the world, he refined the hearts of the disciples. Like this, sometimes we meet a storm on the path that Jesus sends us on but if we just go with faith, because the Lord has commanded us, all we need to do is have faith that he will take care of us then we can overcome any violent storm.

Second, we must remember that the Lord is still praying for us at this very moment. After he sent the disciples off, he looked at the waters raging and prayed for them (:23). Likewise, God won’t ever leave us alone in the place of danger and by following us through prayer takes care of us.

Third, we must remember that the Lord is walking towards me over the waters. The Lord who was praying in the mountains came down in the middle of the night and walked over the waters to save his disciples who were in danger. The disciples were distressed from fear and tired from their suffering but the Lord did not waver and walked over the waters. As soon as he got on the boat the winds and waves became still (:32). Furthermore, if we just have the faith to believe in him, he will provide us with the power to fight off all obstacles and hardships like Peter did standing on water.

What winds and waves are you up against? However great and threatening it may be pray that you will be able to overcome and be victorious through faith in the protection of the Lord that remains with us.
