너무 늦었다고 실망하지 말자

마20:8-10,16

생명의 말씀

“저물매 포도원 주인이 청지기에게 이르되 품군들을 불러 나중온 자로부터 시작하여 먼저 온 자까지 삯을 주라하니 제 십일시에 온 자들이 와서 한 데나리온씩을 받거늘 먼저 온 자들이 와서 더 받을줄 알았더니 저희도 한 데나리온씩 받은지라(:8-10) ... 이와같이 나중 된 자로서 먼저 되고 먼저 된 자로서 나중 되리라(:16)”

본문의 포도원 비유에서 포도원 주인은 살아계신 하나님을 뜻하며, 포도원은 천국, 또는 교회를 말합니다. 품꾼은 믿는 성도를 가리키며 한 데나리온의 삯은 하나님의 은혜와 구원을 상징하고 있습니다. 이 비유에서 주인은 이른 아침부터 품꾼을 얻기 위해 나가서 한 데나리온의 삯을 약속하며 사람들을 불러 모으시는 분으로 묘사되고 있습니다. 이른 아침부터 제 11시까지 포도원 주인은 사람들을 불러 모았습니다. 지금 시간으로 하면 제 11시는 오후 5시에 해당됩니다. 그러니 주인은 이른 아침부터 오후 5시까지 길거리를 돌아다니며 포도원에서 일할 일꾼을 부르셨던 것입니다.

하루 일과를 볼 때 오후 5시면 일을 마치기 직전입니다. 그 때까지 일자리를 얻지 못한 사람은 한마디로 인생 낙오자며 실패자나 마찬가집니다. 이 하루의 시간을 우리 인생의 시간으로 적용해 보면 나이 많아 이제 일할 수 없게된 사람들, 사업에 실패하고 좌절한 사람들, 신앙생활이나 모든 사회생활에서 성공하지 못하고 별 볼일 없는 사람들이 바로 오후 5시 인생의 사람들입니다. 그런데 놀랍게도 하나님께서는 이른 아침뿐 아니라 늦은 시각까지 사람들을 찾기 위해 길거리를 헤매며 좌절과 실망 가운데 있는 사람들을 불러 주셨던 것입니다.

또한 본문의 비유는 우리에게 구원은 오직 하나님의 은혜로 주어짐을 말해주고 있습니다. 오후 5시 인생에게 자기 공로가 있을 수 없습니다. 오전 9시에 온 사람이나 오후 5시에 온 사람이나 똑같이 한 데나리온의 삯이 주어졌습니다. 그러므로 오후 5시 인생에게 한 데나리온은 자기의 노력이나 실적에 대한 대가가 아니라 전적으로 주인의 은혜요 사랑의 표상일 뿐입니다. 이를 깨닫고 감사할 때 가장 늦게 들어왔지만 품삯은 가장 먼저 받는 자가 됩니다.

오후 5시 인생! 인생의 낙오자요 패배자인 나를 늦게까지 기다려 주시고 찾아서 구원의 품삯을 주시는 하나님께 감사하며, 더더욱 충성하는 자가 되기를 위해 기도하십시오.

Do Not Be Discouraged That You Are Late

Matthew 20:8-10

The Word of Life

“When evening came, the owner of the vineyard said to his foreman, ‘Call the workers and pay them their wages, beginning with the last ones hired and going on to the first.’ The workers who were hired about five in the afternoon came and each received a denarius. So when those came who were hired first, they expected to receive more but each one of them also received a denarius.”

In today’s main scripture reading the owner of the vineyard in the parable of the vineyard signifies the living God and the vineyard is representative of heaven and/or the church. The workers refer to the saints who believe and the wage of one denarius refers to salvation and the grace of God. In this parable the owner is portrayed as the one who goes out early in the day to gather workers promising them each a denarius. From the early hours of the morning till 11pm the owner of the vineyard gathered workers. In today’s time frame 11pm would actually be around 5pm thus the owner had been wandering the streets from early in the morning until 5pm in search of workers for his vineyard.

5 o’clock in the evening is a time when a day’s work is usually completed so a person who could not find work until that time is a failure. When we apply the time of a day to the time of our life then those people who are old and can no longer work, whose businesses have failed and have not been successful at both their spiritual and social lives are living a 5pm life.

Furthermore the parable in today’s main scripture reading tells us that salvation is only given to us by the grace of God. At 5 o’clock in the evening there cannot be any self achievements. However the worker who came at 9am and the worker who came at 5pm both received a denarius each. Thus the one denarius given to the person who came at 5pm was not given for that person’s effort or achievement but it is solely a symbol of the grace and love of the owner. When we realise this and give thanks even if we arrive the latest we will be able to receive the denarius first.

Prayer title

Pray that although you are living the life of a latecomer, you will be able to more diligently serve and give thanks to the God who waits and seeks you out first to give you the denarius; the wage of salvation.
