성도가 벗어야 할 옷

엡4:22-24

생명의 말씀

“너희는 유혹의 욕심을 따라 썩어져 가는 구습을 좇는 옛 사람을 벗어 버리고 오직 심령으로 새롭게 되어 하나님을 따라 의와 진리의 거룩함으로 지으심을 받은 새 사람을 입으라”

엡4:22절 말씀을 볼 때 “너희는 유혹의 욕심을 따라 썩어져가는 구습을 좇는 옛 사람을 벗어 버리라”고 했습니다. 여기서 ‘옛 사람’이란 거듭나지 못한 자, 은혜받지 못하고 하나님의 생수를 마시지 못한 자를 가리킵니다.

여자가 임신을 해서 애를 낳는 해산의 용어가 4가지나 된다고 합니다. 유산과 난산과 사산과 순산이 그것입니다. 유산은 산모가 물리적, 혹은 정신적 충격을 받았을 때 나타나는 것이고, 난산은 해산과정이 순조롭지 못해 산모와 아이가 고통 가운데 낳는 것을 말합니다. 사산은 말 그대로 아이가 죽어서 나오는 것입니다. 순산은 말할 수 없는 고통의 과정을 다 거쳐서 새로운 생명이 순조롭게 태어나는 것을 말합니다. 이처럼 해산의 4가지 유형은 성도들의 4가지 신앙생활의 유형과 매우 유사합니다.

첫 번째 유산은 믿는 척 하다가 태어나지도 못하고 죽는 신자의 유형을 말하고, 난산은 교회 나와서 남을 괴롭히고 시험들게 하는 신자를 가리킵니다. 사산은 가룟 유다처럼 죄 가운데 멸망당하는 신자의 예표이며, 순산은 시험과 연단을 잘 견뎌서 그리스도와 교회를 위해 일하는 성도를 가리킨다고 볼 수 있습니다. 본문 엡4:22절에서 옛 사람을 ‘벗어 버리라’는 말은 단순히 벗는 것으로 끝나는 것이 아니라 벗은 후 멀리 내던져 버리라는 뜻입니다. 완전히 폐기처분 하라는 말입니다.

가룟 유다를 보시기 바랍니다. 그는 옷을 벗을 수 있는 기회가 세 번이나 있었습니다. ‘나와 함께 떡 그릇에 손을 넣는 자가 나를 팔 자다’ 했을 때 옛 사람을 벗을 수 있는 마지막 기회가 주어졌던 것입니다. 그러나 요13:30절 말씀을 볼 때 그는 옷을 벗지 않고 어둠의 길로 나아가고 말았습니다. 사산을 당하고 만 것입니다. 그러므로 땅에 있는 지체들을 죽여야만 합니다(골3:5). 이것이 우리가 벗어야 할 것들입니다.

옛 사람의 속성을 벗지 않고는 온전히 주를 따를 수 없습니다. 가룟 유다에게도 죄악의 옷을 벗을 기회를 주셨던 것처럼, 오늘 하루 나에게 주시는 기회를 붙잡아 옛사람을 다 벗어 버릴 수 있도록 기도하십시오.

Lay Aside the Old Self

The Word of Life

"That, in reference to your former manner of life, you lay aside the old self, which is being corrupted in accordance with the lusts of deceit, and that you be renewed in the spirit of your mind, and put on the new self, which in the likeness of God has been created in righteousness and holiness of the truth."

Ephesians 4:22 states “That, in reference to your former manner of life, you lay aside the old self, which is being corrupted in accordance with the lusts of deceit.” The “old self” mentioned in the verse is one who has not been: born again, has not received God’s grace nor drank the living waters.

There are four terminology associated with a pregnancy. They are miscarriage, hard labor, stillbirth, and easy delivery. Miscarriage may occur when the mother has experienced an inevitable trauma and hard labor may occur when the body is not performing correctly.

Stillbirth is when the baby is born dead and easy delivery is when the mother escapes the tremendous pain and gives birth to a new baby. As there are four types of delivery, there are four types of rebirth in the faith.

First is the spiritual miscarriage where you pretend to believe but your faith does not exist. Spiritual hard labor is when you come to church and annoy other believers putting them into temptation. Spiritual stillbirth is like Judas Iscariot who died among His sins. Spiritual easy delivery is when you overcome all the tribulations and endure to remain at the church. Ephesians 4:22 states that we need to “lay aside the old self”. Not only do you lay aside the old self but also you must throw it far away. God wants us to totally abandon it.

Let us look at Judas Iscariot. There were three opportunities for him to lay aside his old self. Jesus said the one who dips his hands with Him in the same bowl would betray Him. This was the final opportunity for Judas to lay aside his old self but instead he immediately went out into the night (John 13:30). This is the stillbirth. We must lay aside our earthly bodies (Colossians 3:5).

"Prayer Request"

We cannot fully follow Jesus if we do not lay aside our old self. Jesus gave Judas Iscariot the opportunity to lay aside his old self. Let us pray that we can hold onto the opportunity that God has given us so that we can lay aside our old self.
