스스로 강대하더라

단8:4,8

“내가 본즉 그 수양이 서와 북과 남을 향하여 받으나 그것을 당할 짐승이 하나도 없고 그 손에서 능히 구할 이가 절대로 없으므로 그것이 임의로 행하고 스스로 강대하더라(:4)... 수염소가 스스로 심히 강대하여 가더니 강성할 때에 그 큰 뿔이 꺾이고 그 대신에 현저한 뿔 넷이 하늘 사방을 향하여 났더라(:8)”

여러분의 힘은 어디에서 나옵니까? 그것은 결코 여러분의 근육이나 머리에서 나오는 것이 아닙니다. 하나님께서 나의 힘이 되어 주셨기 때문에 생명의 숨을 쉴 수 있고 원하는대로 움직일 수가 있습니다. 그런데 오늘 본문에 나오는 수양과 수염소는 이 사실을 망각하고 ‘스스로’ 강대하여졌고 ‘스스로’ 높아졌습니다. 그 결과는 무엇일까요?

본문 7절을 볼 때 스스로 강대하여졌던 수양은 수염소에게 무참히 짓밟히고 맙니다. 당할자가 없을 것 같이 강해 보이던 수염소도 8절 말씀을 볼 때 그 큰 뿔이 꺾였습니다. 그럼에도 ‘스스로’ 높아져 하늘 군대와 군대의 주재를 대적하는 무모함을 자행하고 있습니다. 결국 수염소 또한 자기의 힘으로 말미암은 권세가 아니기 때문에(단8:24) 사람의 손이 아닌 하나님의 손에 의해 멸망당하고 말 것입니다(단8:25).

이처럼 스스로 높아지고 스스로 강대해지려는 것이 이 세상의 속성입니다. 이것이 바로 교만입니다. 그러한 사람들은 본문 4절이나 8절 말씀과 같이 ‘임의로 행하고’ ‘자의로 행하는’ 자들입니다. 그러나 “교만은 멸망의 선봉이요 겸손은 존귀의 앞잡이니라”(잠18:12)라고 하신 말씀처럼 교만한 자는 속히 멸망할 수밖에 없습니다. 반면에 하나님의 사람들은 먼저 하나님께 묻고 하나님의 말씀대로 살아가는 자들입니다. 그러므로 ‘스스로’ 강대하게 행하는 자들은 마치 사사 시대의 이스라엘 사람들처럼 자기 소견에 옳은 대로 행하는 자들과 같습니다 (삿17:6).

우리의 삶을 돌이켜 볼 때 수양이나 수염소처럼 스스로 강한척하고, 스스로 높아지려 한 적은 없습니까? 오늘 말씀을 통해 이제 ‘스스로’ 겸비하고 겸손해지는 여러분이 되시기 바랍니다.

수양과 수염소처럼 스스로 강대하여져서 하나님을 대적하는 삶이 아니라 스스로 겸손해져서 하나님을 충성으로 섬기는 하루가 되기를 위해 기도하십시오.

Become Strong

Daniel 8:4, 8

4 “I watched the ram as it charged toward the west and the north and the south. No animal could stand against it, and none could rescue from its power. It did as it pleased and became great.”

8 “The goat became very great, but at the height of its power the large horn was broken off, and in its place four prominent horns grew up toward the four winds of heaven.”

Where does your strength come from? Our strength does not come from our muscles or our head but from God. He becomes our strength allowing us to breathe the breath of life and move the way we want. However, the ram and the goat in today’s main verse have forgotten this fact and “did as it pleased” and “became great”. What was the outcome?

In verse 7 the ram that had become great is being crushed by the goat and we see the horn of the goat whose greatness appeared to have no match break off in verse 8. Nevertheless, the goat “did as it pleased” and we see it recklessly fighting the army of heaven. Consequently, because the power of the goat was not the outcome of its own strength (Dan 8:24), it perishes in the hands of God and not the hands of man (Dan 8:25).

Likewise, these are the properties of the world that wants to become powerful. This is arrogance but like in verse 4 and 8 of the main scripture reading people “do as they please” and “act on their own accord”. However, as it is recorded in Proverbs 18:12, “before a downfall the heart is haughty, but humility comes before honor” the one who is arrogant will be quick to perish. In contrast the people of God first ask God and live their lives according to the Word of God. Therefore, those who “become great” are like the Israelites during the period of the Judges whom acted according to what they thought were right (Judges 17:6). When we look back on our lives didn’t we try and act strong and become stronger like the ram and the goat? Through today’s Word may you humble yourself and become a humble person.

Pray that today you will not live a life opposing God by becoming strong like the ram and goat but rather may you become humble and live a life that serves God with obedience.
