소원대로 되는 믿음

마15:26-28

생명의 말씀

“...자녀의 떡을 취하여 개들에게 던짐이 마땅치 아니하니라 여자가 가로되 주여 옳소이다마는 개들도 제 주인의 상에서 떨어지는 부스러기를 먹나이다 하니 이에 예수께서 대답하여 가라사대 여자야 네 믿음이 크도다 네 소원대로 되리라 하시니 그시로부터 그의 딸이 나으니라”

극적인 감동은 정상을 벗어나고 상식을 초월한 행동이 있을 때 가능합니다. 오늘 본문에서 가나안 여인과 예수님과의 관계는 이를 잘 보여주고 있습니다. 자신의 딸을 귀신에게 빼앗긴 여인! 얼마나 그 마음이 절박하고 간절하겠습니까? 딸을 구원하고자 하는 오직 한 마음을 가지고 주님께 나아와 소리를 지릅니다. “주 다윗의 자손이여 나를 불쌍히 여기소서! 내 딸이 흉악히 귀신들렸나이다.” 가나안 여인의 절규가 귓전에 생생히 들리는 듯 합니다. 그러나 이 여인의 절박한 외침에도 주님은 아랑곳하지 않습니다. “선생님. 뒤에서 소리지르는 저 여자좀 내보내주세요” 보다 못한 제자들의 외침입니다. 그래도 예수님의 반응은 덤덤할 뿐입니다. “나는 이스라엘의 잃어버린 양 외에는 다른 데로 보내심을 받지 않았다.” 무슨 말입니까? 이방 가나안 여인은 나와 상관없다는 것입니다.

이쯤되면 아무리 딸을 귀신에게 빼앗겼다 해도 포기하고 돌아갑니다. 뭐 저런 사람이 다 있느냐며 성질을 내며 나가겠지요. 그러나, 가나안 여인은 우리가 상식으로 생각하는 그 이상의 사람이었습니다. 물러서지 않고 끈덕지게 또 요구합니다. “주여 저를 도우소서”. 그러자 예수님은 한술 더 뜹니다. “자녀의 떡을 취하여 개들에게 던짐이 마땅치 아니하니라”. 너같은 가나안 이방 여자는 개와 같다는 말입니다. 감당키 어려운 모욕입니다. 그래도 가나안 여인은 물러서지 않습니다. “개들도 주인의 상에서 떨어지는 부스러기를 먹지 않습니까?” 자존심,부끄러움. 다 내어버리고 딸의 회복에 대한 소원이 성취될 때까지 믿음으로 매달리는 이 여인의 상식을 초월하는 믿음 앞에 예수님의 마음이 감동됐습니다. 야곱의 처절한 몸부림에 굴복하며 ‘이스라엘’이란 승리의 새 이름을 주셨던 것처럼, 이제 주님께서도 이 여인의 소원을 들어주십니다. “여자야, 네 믿음이 크도다 네 소원대로 되리라”.

가나안 여인과 같은 간절함과 끈질김으로 기도하고, 오늘 하루도 “네 믿음이 크도다 네 소원대로 되리라”는 응답을 받을 때까지 마음을 다해 간구하십시오.

The Faith That Fulfills Our Wishes

Matt 15:26-28

The Word of Life

“It is not right to take the children’s bread and toss it to the dogs.”

“Yes it is, Lord,” she said. “Even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from their master’s table.”

Then Jesus said to her, “Woman, you have great faith! Your request is granted.” And her daughter was healed at that moment.

It is truly emotional when something happens that transcends all understanding.

This is shown in today’s passage through the relationship between the Canaanite woman and Jesus. This woman had lost her daughter to the demon! How desperate would she be? With a desperate heart to save her daughter, she comes to Jesus and cries out.

“Lord, Son of David, have mercy on me! My daughter is demon-possessed and suffering terribly.” The Canaanite woman cried. However, Jesus did not answer a word. So his disciples came to him and urged him, “Send her away, or she keeps crying out after us.” But Jesus remained calm. And He answered, “I was sent only to the sheep of Israel.” What does He mean? This means that He has nothing to do with the gentile Canaanite woman.

By this point, the woman should’ve given up even if her daughter is demon-possessed. She should’ve left in anger. However, this Canaanite woman was a person beyond our understanding.She did not give up but persistently requested. “Lord help me”. But Jesus replied, “It is not right to take the children’s bread and toss it to the dogs.”

This was almost like saying that she was a dog. To her it is an intolerable insult. However, the Canaanite woman did not give up and said, “Even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from their master’s table.”

She did not let her pride and shame get in the way of saving her daughter, but she held on to the faith.

Jesus’ heart was moved by the faith of the Canaanite woman and so He granted her wish. “Woman, you have great faith! Your request is granted.” Like when the new name “Israel” was given to Jacob after he had struggled with God, the woman’s wish had been granted by Jesus. “Woman, you have great faith, your request is granted.”

Pray with all your heart and zeal like the Canaanite woman, until you receive this answer: “You have great faith, Your request is granted.”
