입술을 제어하는 지혜자

생명의 말씀

“말을 아끼는 자는 지식이 있고 성품이 안존한 자는 명철하니라... 말이 많으면 허물을 면키 어려우나 그 입술을 제어하는 자는 지혜가 있느니라”

사람은 말로 망하고 말로 흥한다고 했습니다. 이처럼 말은 어떻게 활용하느냐에 따라 사람을 흥하게도 하고 망하게도 하는 도구입니다. 성경 또한 말의 이중적 기능에 대해 언급하고 있습니다.

말의 긍정적인 효과는 사람의 마음을 즐겁게 하고 유쾌하게 한다는 것입니다. 이는 ‘때에 맞는 말’(잠15:23), ‘정직한 말’(잠23:16), ‘경우에 합당한 말’(잠25:11)을 할 때 그 말이 상대방을 유쾌하게 하고 기분좋게 해주기 때문입니다. 상대방이 잘못했을 경우 적절하고도 슬기로운 말로 책망해줄 때 이를 듣고 돌이키게 되면 사람의 마음을 즐겁게 해주는 ‘기름과 향’처럼 좋은 효과를 나타내게 됩니다(잠27:9). 반면에 말의 부정적인 효과는 마치 죽이는 칼과 같고 독과 같아서 사람의 마음을 상하게 하고 죽게 만듭니다. 이에 대해 시편기자는 “그 입으로 악을 토하며 그 입술에는 칼이 있어 이르기를 누가 들으리요”(시59:7)라고 하였습니다. 또한 사람이 상대방에 대해 미운 감정이 있으면 “칼 같이 자기 혀를 연마하며 화살 같이 독한 말로”(시64:3) 겨누게 됩니다. 그러므로 사람의 죽고 사는 것이 ‘혀의 권세’에 달려 있습니다(잠18:21).

좋은 말을 하면 좋은 열매를 먹고 믿지 못하는 불신앙의 말을 하면 사망의 열매를 먹습니다. 그러나 대부분의 경우 사람들의 말은 좋은 열매보다는 나쁜 열매를 맺는 경우가 훨씬 많습니다. 그래서 성경은 아무리 친한 벗이라도 혀를 제어하지 못하는 말장이는 친구를 이간하며(잠16:28), 다툼이 난무하게 된다고 말씀하고 있습니다. “나무가 다하면 불이 꺼지고 말장이가 없어지면 다툼이 쉬느니라”(잠26:20)는 말씀이 이 경우에 해당됩니다. 그러므로 “입과 혀를 지키는 자는 그 영혼을 환난에서 보전하느니라”(잠21:23)고 하신 말씀을 마음에 새기는 가운데, 어떤 말을 듣던지 옮기지 않고, 험담하지 않고 자기 혀를 잘 제어함으로 하나님께 ‘지혜자’로 인정받는 성도님들이 되시기 바랍니다.

오늘 여러분의 입은 어떤 말을 하고 있습니까? 여러분은 여러분의 혀를 얼마나 잘 제어하고 있습니까? 오늘 하루 여러분의 혀를 잘 제어하여 사람들의 마음을 유쾌하고 즐겁게 하고, 사람들을 악에서 돌이키는 생명의 말만 할 수 있기를 위해 기도하십시오.

The Word of Life

The one who has knowledge uses words with restraint, and whoever has understanding is even-tempered.

It is said that man fall and rise because of words. In this way, a man’s word is a tool that can make a person prosper or fail according to how it is used. The Bible also refers to the contrasting use of words.

A positive effect of words can make a person’s heart happy and cheerful. This is possible when we speak “a timely word” (Prov 15:23), “speak what is right” (Prov 23:16) and words that “are appropriate for the situation” (Prov 25:11).

Even when somebody has done something wrong if we rebuke them with appropriate and sensible words they will listen and turn around which will result in a good outcome like the “oil and its scent” making the heart happy and joyful (Prov 27:9). On the other hand, the negative effects of words are like a sword that kills and like poison that hurt the heart of man and die.

Regarding this the Psalmist said in Psalm 59:7 “see what they spew from their mouths— the words from their lips are sharp as swords, and they think, “Who can hear us?”. Furthermore when a man has hatred for another “they sharpen their tongues like swords and aim cruel words like deadly arrows” (Psa 64:3). Therefore the life and death of a man lies in the “authority of the tongue” (Prov 18:21).

If we say good things we eat good fruit and if we speak words that are of disbelief and are unfaithful we eat the fruit of death. However in most instances people’s words bear fruit that bad rather than good. Thus the Bible says in Proverbs 16:28 that “a perverse

person stirs up conflict, and a gossip separates close friends” and as it is written in Proverbs 26:20 “without wood a fire goes out; without a gossip a quarrel dies down”

Therefore we need to deeply etch into our hearts this word written in Proverbs 21:23, “those who guard their mouths and their tongues keep themselves from calamity” and whatever words we hear not leak it to others, nor badmouth others but rather through controlling our tongues well, become acknowledged by God as wise saints.

Prayer Title

What words are you speaking today? How well are you controlling your tongue? Pray that today you will be able to control your tongue well and make other people’s hearts happy and cheerful and only speak the Word of life that will enable people to turn away from evil.
